The most important thing is to gain a core understanding of the topic, and not just a surface level rote learning of how to solve problems. It's also important to have an understanding of each student and to recognise when to push them and when they've hit a wall (mentally). I think my greatest strength is my approachability and flexibility. I do…

Studying techniques, creating good habits and of course, feedback for improvements! These are the important aspects that a tutor should show their students. There is much more to learning than parroting back facts - information needs to absorbed, regurgitated, reused in a practical sense. I have much hands-on experience in using my chosen skills -…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is just be patient with them. As students are brought up in a competitive environment in school, most times they feel inferior to their peers as not everyone learns at the same pace. Some learn faster and some learn slower and most often students feel lost and pressured. As a tutor, being there for…

Building the student's confidence and knowledge are the two key aspects of being a tutor that I have found during my experience. Nothing is more important than a student feeling they can combat the work which is put in front of them. I can be flexible and work with the strengths and weaknesses of my students. I am extremely organised which allows…

A tutor should always motivate a student to have a specific goal and want to work towards it. Tutors must inspire their students to strive to achieve and to dream of a future where they are successful. Being organised is crucial. Giving a student time to reflect on what they have learned, by spending time during a lesson explaining their…

To recognise that no two students are the same and that a process like learning needs to be personalised so that the best results are achieved. I find that addressing the finer parts that students find more challenging is essential for a tutor. While students may have already covered the concepts in class, the learning process is often not tailored to their individual needs. A tutors role is to adopt a more personalised approach, taking the time to understand each student’s unique level…

Primarily, a tutor needs to be someone the student can depend on for sound knowledge of the content. Be available and help them develop transferable skills. In my opinion, there's no point handing them an A+ essay to study and learn phrases, but rather help them understand why each type of connection and phrase is important and adds value, so that they can build their own skills which can be used under pressure in exams and across all of their…

Inside JacanaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Mary worked on adding fractions with different denominators and tackled factors and multiples, finishing a tricky homework sheet together.

Year 8 student Bill focused on reducing fractions through targeted practice and discussed division in relation to multiplication, using examples from recent lessons.

For Year 9, Alex revised multiplying and dividing negative numbers, including a spelling test and vocabulary worksheet for literacy reinforcement within the session.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often left English essays incomplete for homework, particularly after receiving a disappointing mark; as noted, "he seemed distressed and avoided starting the next essay," which led to missed opportunities for feedback and improvement.

In Year 7 Maths, another student consistently forgot to complete assigned revision sheets before a fractions test—this meant class time was spent on catch-up rather than tackling new material.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student preferred to attempt only familiar problems in algebra revision, shying away from more challenging questions and limiting exposure to essential concepts needed for exam readiness.

Recent Achievements

One Jacana tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking for help—now, he openly voices questions when stuck on essay planning and even suggests what he'd like to review next.

A high schooler tackling long division had previously needed lots of guidance but can now finish complex worded problems independently after practicing with homework.

In a primary session, a Year 4 student who once got frustrated by spelling mistakes now takes them in stride and finishes tests with far fewer corrections, even celebrating when he spelled most tricky words right.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hume Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - Basketball Broadmeadows.
