At a foundational level, it's most important to ensure the student feels confident with the material they're learning. As a first step, it's important for an english tutor to assist in honing in and helping the student practice so that their skill level matches the basic requirements of the subject. Then the next most important thing a tutor can…

What I consider to be the most important things an english tutor can do for a student is understanding the pace the student requires and not focusing on how much a student can complete in a set time. Another one is being available for the student when possible as students may not think of questions or ideas when they are with me. My strengths as a…

The most important things an english tutor can do for a student is to show them efficient and effective ways of taking notes and studying, giving students detailed feedback and enabling students to reflect and learn from their own work by marking practice assessments and working together. My greatest strengths as a tutor is that I can give on the…

The most important aspect for an english tutor can do for a student is going down to the students level and building the foundation with the student in order to achieve and maximise the learning in an effective and efficient manner. A tutor can motivate his student to do the best, with noticing student's weakness, without letting him know because if students got to know their weaknesses they concentrate towards them and don't focus on their goal, so it's good to encourage them. I am flexible, reliable, trustworthy and can answer students queries to their satisfaction, without…

I think the most significant thing that an english tutor can do is to instill confidence in the student, make them able to learn, and independent learners. It's not providing them with the answers but making them see the 'why' about things. A good tutor listens, is attuned to the way of learning of the student, and gets them at ease asking…

A tutor's role gets more prominent when s/he tries to enable the learner to understand the language and use the language in the real world. Put it simply, the learner should be enabled to understand English, analyse it, speak it and more importantly use the English functions in the right place. For instance, in sessions with learners, I will…

I believe that an english tutor needs to be able to explain a certain topic in different ways as one approach is not a fit for all. Alongside this, communicating and being emotionally intelligent allows to truly understand your student and how they deal with acedemic pressure etc. Ultimately, patience is the key when it comes to tutoring as…

I think that structure and predictability is the most important thing an english tutor can do, as it is easier for students to know what to expect in class, and future lessons. Having organised lesson plans not only ensures that all key topics are covered, but also allows students to focus more on the material itself rather than wondering what…

I have experienced firsthand the difference a tutor can make on a child's enthusiasm and engagement with a subject, and I want to pass that onto the next generation of kids. This passion, I think, is the most important thing a tutor or any teacher can give to their student, because it opens their eyes to the complexity and beauty of the subject-…

Inside JacanaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Mary worked on adding fractions with different denominators and tackled factors and multiples, finishing a tricky homework sheet together.

Year 8 student Bill focused on reducing fractions through targeted practice and discussed division in relation to multiplication, using examples from recent lessons.

For Year 9, Alex revised multiplying and dividing negative numbers, including a spelling test and vocabulary worksheet for literacy reinforcement within the session.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often left English essays incomplete for homework, particularly after receiving a disappointing mark; as noted, "he seemed distressed and avoided starting the next essay," which led to missed opportunities for feedback and improvement.

In Year 7 Maths, another student consistently forgot to complete assigned revision sheets before a fractions test—this meant class time was spent on catch-up rather than tackling new material.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student preferred to attempt only familiar problems in algebra revision, shying away from more challenging questions and limiting exposure to essential concepts needed for exam readiness.

Recent Achievements

One Jacana tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking for help—now, he openly voices questions when stuck on essay planning and even suggests what he'd like to review next.

A high schooler tackling long division had previously needed lots of guidance but can now finish complex worded problems independently after practicing with homework.

In a primary session, a Year 4 student who once got frustrated by spelling mistakes now takes them in stride and finishes tests with far fewer corrections, even celebrating when he spelled most tricky words right.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hume Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - Basketball Broadmeadows.
