Helping a student visualize the portions they learn would be the best thing a tutor can do for a student. If a student is able to visualize a portion, the student will be able to learn the concept and use it to apply in various applications. Making a student fall in love with what they learn is the most important thing, as I experienced the same…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to celebrate even the smallest of wins. No matter how slow or hard progress is, it is still progress! Of course it is important to push students, but it is equally important to build their self confidence. One of my strengths is my patience. Thanks to my past experience as a Teacher's…

Helping students understand their topics rather than having them "parrot learn" their topics is vital. A basic understanding of the various topics is vital as progression and improvement in results will be limited if this understanding is not occurring. If a student does not enjoy the subject you are tutoring, I see it as very important to…

I think the most important thing is to let the student know it is okay to ask as many questions as they want and to feel confident enough to let me know, as their tutor, when soemthing is hard or when they don’t understand something. In summary, I think it is very relevant to create a safe space for students to learn. I have a lot of paciente…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build the student’s confidence. In order to find a level of improvement, it is crucial that the tutor exposes the student to many different contexts and scenarios that can improve their understanding in the subject. A tutor is more than just a tutor. The role of tutor is more like a coach or confidant. Students should feel free enough to discuss anything that came up during their day at school. Together both student and tutor can figure out how best to proceed. A coach in the sense that you help guide them towards habits that will help them become better…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to provide academic guidance and build a connection with the student so that the student can trust the tutor and share his problems with them. Consistence is the key to tutoring as you need to all be on your toes and be ready for all sorts of queries. In my opinion, when all these…

Inside KarrakattaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Michael practised simplifying and comparing fractions, then applied these skills to converting between decimals and percentages.

In Year 10, Sarah focused on quadratic equations by converting from general form to turning point form and identifying roots and axes of symmetry using worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Alex tackled linear and non-linear relationships by interpreting graphs and equations from real-world contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly avoided writing out full working in algebra and index notation questions; as one tutor observed, "mistakes were made due to lack of working out," which led to hidden errors that slowed progress during review.

In Year 11 physics, over-reliance on the equation sheet was noted—Chris needed more familiarity with deriving formulas independently rather than searching for answers, especially under time pressure.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student struggled with reading worded problems closely; skipping key details resulted in incomplete answers on circumference and probability tasks.

During practice exams, several students lost marks due to poor time management and not checking their responses before moving on.

Recent Achievements

One Karrakatta tutoring session saw a Year 11 student, Chris, move from avoiding challenging physics questions to working through them independently and even explaining his thinking out loud—a real turnaround from early lessons where he'd hesitate or stay quiet.

In Year 10, Mitchell has stopped skipping steps in his maths working; instead of trying to solve everything mentally (and making errors), he now writes out each stage clearly and checks his answers.

For a younger student, Antonio's focus has improved noticeably—he stayed engaged for the full lesson and was quick to spot tricky parts in mental maths problems that used to trip him up.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nedlands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hollywood Primary School.
