I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand them. Learning new things can be overwhelming and thus remembering that your students are trying to grasp new knowledge every second is often overlooked. Being a student myself, I know the importance of needing to know even the smallest details but also finding it…

Although it is highly important that a tutor teaches their students the material covered in the syllabus, it is equally as important that the tutor teaches their students the tools required to succeed in a competitive academic environment. As a tutor, I instil in my students a great work ethic, teaching them highly effective study and time…

For me, as a student, what I sought from my tutor was discovering how I learn best, rather than adhering to a one-size-fits-all approach. I also valued having someone with whom I could freely share my thoughts without fear of judgment, essentially a friend. Intuitive( I can understand and know when a topic boring and making it fun or finding a…

A tutor is more than just one that imparts knowledge. Any textbook, podcast or Youtube Video can do that. The power of a good tutor is in his or her ability to strengthen and encourage their students, so helping them gain some momentum to keep persevering in subjects that are challenging them. This means patiently helping the students understand…

As I have mentioned in my strength, I consider that it is very important to be an easy person to interact with. It enables students to be comfortable with the tutor and clarify their doubts. It is also important for the tutor to do his homework before tutoring and understand the learning speed of the student. Tutors must not be boring and make…

To give the student confidence and show them that the subject is not beyond their understandings. Prove that It's not difficult but needs to be approached correctly. Almost all students have more than enough talent to do their study, the most import thing in tutoring is to help them to uncover that (sometimes) hidden talent. In addition to my…

The important thing a tutor can do for a student is make them feel more confident about their abilities and knowledge. The more they can back them-self, the more they can be composed in a test environment, the better they perform in test conditions, the better their marks. Tutors have two roles, One is to actively support the student who might be struggling to cope up with their peers and/or looking to improve their performance. The second is to make the student learn in a different environment from their school. Schools have multiple children and every child has some issue they are facing. As a tutor sitting 1-1…

If I can make a student begin thinking more about the subject than just a grade to obtain, I would have felt that I made one more curious person. Gain confidence, I feel students are confused and not able to express their confusion. Take an approach where a tutor can balance the academic needs which are immediate but also develop critical thinking skills in the student which are long term benefits. Inside KarrakattaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Michael practised simplifying and comparing fractions, then applied these skills to converting between decimals and percentages.

In Year 10, Sarah focused on quadratic equations by converting from general form to turning point form and identifying roots and axes of symmetry using worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Alex tackled linear and non-linear relationships by interpreting graphs and equations from real-world contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly avoided writing out full working in algebra and index notation questions; as one tutor observed, "mistakes were made due to lack of working out," which led to hidden errors that slowed progress during review.

In Year 11 physics, over-reliance on the equation sheet was noted—Chris needed more familiarity with deriving formulas independently rather than searching for answers, especially under time pressure.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student struggled with reading worded problems closely; skipping key details resulted in incomplete answers on circumference and probability tasks.

During practice exams, several students lost marks due to poor time management and not checking their responses before moving on.

Recent Achievements

One Karrakatta tutoring session saw a Year 11 student, Chris, move from avoiding challenging physics questions to working through them independently and even explaining his thinking out loud—a real turnaround from early lessons where he'd hesitate or stay quiet.

In Year 10, Mitchell has stopped skipping steps in his maths working; instead of trying to solve everything mentally (and making errors), he now writes out each stage clearly and checks his answers.

For a younger student, Antonio's focus has improved noticeably—he stayed engaged for the full lesson and was quick to spot tricky parts in mental maths problems that used to trip him up.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nedlands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hollywood Primary School.
