There are things taught at school that are not always assimilated by some of the students. This is because in school, they follow a standard setting or style of teaching which is not applicable for everyone but only for a certain percentage or average. Tutors are built for this specific reason. Tutors customise and plan a specific program for a…

I think a tutor's only job is to motivate their students and let them develop their own interests in the subject.  I think once you motivate them and make them think about the subject on their own, your job is done.  From then on, it's a matter of aiding their intellectual journey.  And I think what enables tutors to fulfil that job is using…

The most important thing is to communicate on a level that is with the students so they can understand the topics you are teaching, so they still feel connected and engaged in learning. In addition, also having a variety of strategies as one size does not fit all so it is about finding the best fit for each student. My strength is to provide…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student genuinely understand what they are learning while also building their confidence. A tutor should be patient, explain concepts in a way that suits the student, and make sure they feel comfortable asking questions. It is also important to help students become more independent so they…

Making sure that the student is comfortable and not to push them so soon into the problems and questions - ease them into the subject. If they are already "good" at the subject, then it comes down to being there to cultivate their skill with them. Ensuring the students understand first, then applying the fundamentals. I am a big advocate for…

Build confidence, encourage participation and motivation, be supportive and promote independence. A combination of all these factors will achieve results, which is ultimately the goal. I think besides helping a student with his/her academics, a tutor can act as a role model for him/her or someone he/she can look up to. A tutor can not only provide academic assistance but also can broadens a student's outlook in many ways by sharing with him/her many stories, news and also giving an idea about manners and ethics as well. The most…

The most important thing in teaching is to make the student believe that they will surpass any goals they set their minds into. Level communication in a way the students will be comfortable to interact with. It will be best if the students seek out help and teachers guide them into analyzing the problem themselves. This is when students start to…

Inside Keilor DownsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Mariana reviewed **directed numbers** by adding and subtracting fractions, converting recurring decimals, and tackled temperature questions involving freezing and boiling points.

For Year 11, Sam worked on **graphing parabolas from both standard and turning point forms**, focusing on finding the axis of symmetry, x-intercepts using the quadratic formula, and interpreting discriminants.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Daksh addressed Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy techniques and explored **Le Chatelier's principle in chemical equilibrium scenarios**.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student struggled to translate worded problems into algebraic expressions and often avoided attempting tougher questions, as one tutor noted: "She hesitated to start unless she was sure of the method."

In a Year 11 session, confusion between similar formulas for quadratic functions led to frequent errors—memorisation and distinguishing formula use became stumbling blocks.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student frequently mixed up area and perimeter rules for circles and sometimes skipped revising previous topics when new ones were introduced. These process issues left gaps that slowed progress on more advanced concepts in later lessons.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Keilor Downs noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who previously avoided tough NMR questions but, after extra practice and targeted examples, started tackling them without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student—who often waited for help—began arriving at sessions with specific algebra questions she'd struggled with on her own, showing more self-awareness and initiative.

For one of the younger students, there's been clear progress: he used to get stuck on worded problems involving fractions but now works through them step by step after seeing just one example together.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Deer Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Keilor Views Primary School.
