The most important thing I can do as a tutor is meet every student where they are. That means truly listening to them, understanding what they already know, and empowering them to vocalize their own thought process because when a student can articulate their thinking, real learning begins. Rather than lecturing, I guide. I help students connect…

A tutor should offer an individualised teaching method that works to that student's strengths and takes into account any weaknesses. Whether that mean explaining new concepts in more engaging ways or focusing on certain aspects that a student is finding particularly difficult to grasp. A tutor should also help students feel more confident in their…

To attentively listen to the student (their stories, worries, and struggles), to identify areas that the student need more work on, trying different learning approaches, to be able to break down large problems into smaller easily managed tasks, and to share our life and study skills with them where relevant. As a tutor, I believe I am very…

Helping develop adaptability and time-management skills. Encouraging independent and critical thinking. Improving a student's overall attitude towards…

Building a relationship and rapport with the student is vital for success in tutoring, it can be difficult for students to ask for help and accept it once given it, so making a student feel comfortable is the best strategy for ensuring success. In my opinion, the first thing a tutor can do to help a student is to first listen to them and take their concerns very seriously. It may be a very simple doubt, but the moment they accept that we are ready to listen to their concerns, we automatically grab their attention and build up a rapport with them. Another critical aspect of tutoring is to…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel supported and confident. The most important thing, according to me, is that the tutor is able to sympathise with the student. More often, in a class full of people, a student can feel like they're the only one who's falling behind. A tutor can help the student get out of that sort of thinking, and personally, at a one-on-one level, be involved in helping the student out…

Alex has been a great tutor for my son. He is patient, encouraging and explains things clearly. My son feels feels so much more confident in Maths thanks to Alex!
Lauren, Kew East

Inside Kew EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting mixed numbers as well as converting them to improper fractions, practicing with visual examples.

In Year 8, Emily tackled algebraic equations involving multiple operations to solve for x and worked through inequalities step by step.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack prepared for an upcoming test by working through surface area and volume questions, using real-life cylinder examples to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, hesitation to draft ideas led to frequent pauses; as a tutor observed, "he often waited for reassurance before writing, which slowed his argument planning."

During a Year 11 maths session on compound interest, skipping double-checks of formulas meant answers didn't match the scenario's time frame.

In Year 7 algebra, working was mostly done in his head—steps weren't written out, so mistakes were harder to spot.

For a primary student practicing fractions, messy layout made it tricky to track simplification steps.

Each moment brought visible frustration when confidence dipped after an error.

Recent Achievements

One Kew East tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rush through algebra now stopping to check his work against a list of self-made questions, catching mistakes before moving on.

Another high school student recently tackled compound interest problems solo for the first time, after previously needing step-by-step guidance every session.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, a student who would avoid writing tasks managed to plan and write an entire persuasive piece in one go and even remembered to structure it using TEEL—something he'd struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kew Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anne's School.
