Teach genuinely, give out all information they know of the subject. To choose sharing knowledge over money. To have patients to deal with any kind of student since each student could have a different speed of learning or picking up. My strengths would be that I am a young, patient teacher who can teach any type of student. I have the ability to…

The most important thing I think is for the tutor to build confidence in a student. To do this, I believe continual encouragement is required and something I always aim to do. Patience and the ability to remain calm at all times. I am also very persistent and will try a variety of methods that will allow the student to see concepts from a variety…

A tutor can tailor there style much more closely to the individual needs of the student, provide a more focused approach and cover the material the student needs help with the most, and go beyond the basic material to challenge the student and inspire them to learn. To inspire them, to teach them, to help them and to be a role model. We can have fun during activities and do serious work when we should. It is through the Tutor that the student will probably choose his field for his career, so the Tutor has to be really encouraging. One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be able to explain how to solve problems in several different ways, particularly if a student is struggling to understand how to solve it the first time. These problem solving skills will help them in other areas as well, such as chemistry and physics. My main strength as a tutor…

The best thing my methods tutor did for me in year 12 was by far to cut out the crap and stretched analogies. To learn things simply for what they are. By understanding principles in a simple and raw way, the originally complex problems were solved at a glance, leaving only the problem of writing down the working I had already seen in my mind. …

In my perspective, providing confidence is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. The majority of people would hire a tutor is because of one's unsatisfactory performance towards the subject. Confidence would increase the understanding process for most of the people. Furthermore, to excel in the subject, the student has to work…

Patience. Once we know something, it's easy to forget how we actually learnt that content. Therefore, it's important to always be persistent with someone's learning, and to never just keep using the same method then give up. Another aspect is structure. If you give students an expectation and guidance in what they need to do, it's more…

I believe a tutor can have tremendous effects on the self confidence of a student and his ways of learning. I am a very approachable tutor and I mostly have my own ways to approach a problem. Helping them grow, both academically and in extracurricular aspects. Alex has been a great tutor for my son. He is patient, encouraging and explains things clearly. My son feels feels so much more confident in Maths thanks to Alex!
Lauren, Kew East

Inside Kew EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting mixed numbers as well as converting them to improper fractions, practicing with visual examples.

In Year 8, Emily tackled algebraic equations involving multiple operations to solve for x and worked through inequalities step by step.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack prepared for an upcoming test by working through surface area and volume questions, using real-life cylinder examples to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, hesitation to draft ideas led to frequent pauses; as a tutor observed, "he often waited for reassurance before writing, which slowed his argument planning."

During a Year 11 maths session on compound interest, skipping double-checks of formulas meant answers didn't match the scenario's time frame.

In Year 7 algebra, working was mostly done in his head—steps weren't written out, so mistakes were harder to spot.

For a primary student practicing fractions, messy layout made it tricky to track simplification steps.

Each moment brought visible frustration when confidence dipped after an error.

Recent Achievements

One Kew East tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rush through algebra now stopping to check his work against a list of self-made questions, catching mistakes before moving on.

Another high school student recently tackled compound interest problems solo for the first time, after previously needing step-by-step guidance every session.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, a student who would avoid writing tasks managed to plan and write an entire persuasive piece in one go and even remembered to structure it using TEEL—something he'd struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kew Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anne's School.
