One of the most important things a tutor can do is just be patient with them. As students are brought up in a competitive environment in school, most times they feel inferior to their peers as not everyone learns at the same pace. Some learn faster and some learn slower and most often students feel lost and pressured. As a tutor, being there for…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student to lift them up what they feel mostly interested while learning anything. To motivate them while they do something new and bring any new idea to resolve any problem. That will help to develop the psychology of a student in more positive way to move forward with their willingness of thinking…

Being there and answering questions they ask at anytime whoch would be crucial. If a student puts effort into attending tutoring sessions then we should put the effort of helping them as much as we can. Ability to provide feedback continuously based on the students progess and able to go at a slow pace. As a university student I still have…

I would consider an ongoing \'positive reinforcement and encouragement\' to student is crucial for their success. Students love to be motivated in learning and they love to feel loved and supported in their learning journey. We as tutors are not just there to teach them what to do, but as their motivators to guide and encourage, so that they can…

Be empathetic as well as listen slowly and carefully to the reason people are having one or a few issues. Then repeat the issues back to them so they know where the hiccup lies. Allow the person to reach the solution themselves will mean they understand the topic in depth and now have the empowerment to tackle the next issue with more…

Listen to what the student has to say, and base their teaching strategy around their individual needs. If the tutor doesn’t listen to a student or understand their struggles with certain areas, how could the tutor expect good results from their student? I believe I am very clear and concise with what I teach, and that because of my openly…

Georgie is really enjoying coaching with Gabrielle. She's already doing so much better in maths at school (her teacher has commented on the huge improvement at recent parent teacher conference!). Gabrielle is a real asset to your team. She's so polite, punctual, intelligent and just fantastic.

Inside KingsburyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Jessie worked on long division with both one- and two-digit divisors, then moved into simplifying and converting improper fractions as well as solving basic algebraic equations.

Year 8 student Amy focused on expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions, including the use of negative numbers, while also practicing distance formula calculations between two points without a calculator.

For Year 9, Ethan tackled trigonometry concepts such as Pythagoras' theorem and introductory trig ratios, supported by diagram-based problem-solving.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student relied heavily on calculators for basic multiplication ("tended to want to use the calculator for simpler multiplication problems such as 7x8 or 87x100"), which slowed progress in algebra and mental arithmetic.

A Year 11 student in Economics struggled to explain answers using key terms, leading to weaker responses on longer written tasks.

For a Year 5 learner, messy working made it difficult to track steps when dividing fractions, so mistakes went unnoticed until the end.

In VCE Chemistry, another needed reminders about organizing materials and remembering anion/cation rules before tests—forgetting led to confusion during practice questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Kingsbury noticed a Year 9 student who used to rush through maths in her head now actively uses rough working and worked examples, helping her spot mistakes before they become habits.

In a recent high school biology session, one student started the lesson unsure but finished by completing textbook questions independently after clarifying the key concepts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who was hesitant about multiplication began writing out her steps instead of guessing, which let her quickly find where she went wrong—she even asked for more challenging problems once she got the hang of it.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Reservoir Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of the Way School.
