Keep motivating the student and teaching discipline as without it the student will not be able to maintain their new study habits long term rendering tutoring useless. Most importantly teaching the child how to learn and be curious helping them gain knowledge about the world and a hunger for learning. I am excellent at organisation and…

I believe my strength would be my inquisitiveness for more knowledge and learning and an attitude to learn while being open to exchange knowldge on the…

Ultimately, a tutor should aim to foster independence in students, empowering them to become self-directed learners who can take ownership of their education beyond the tutoring sessions. This includes teaching study skills, time management, and organizational strategies that can help students become more independent and successful learners. I can…

I personally think that the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to explain any concepts of certain subjects in the most comprehensive way for the student to understand and try to bring out the inner passion of the student towards the subject. I think my strength as a tutor is to incorporate active learning into the lessons and…

The tutor can help them achieve their goal if they have difficulties and help them understand the basic concept. My strength as a tutor is the most important aspect of understanding the student. I believe that a tutor needs to communicate with the student about their needs. I think that if the student and the tutor communicate well and both parties understand each other, then it will help the student tremendously. They will be willing to ask questions and participate during the lesson. I am an approachable person. I feel like my passion…

Extending beyond the scope of just being a tutor at set times is key for a student’s confidence and rapport building. Knowing they can contact me outside contact hours for small things here and there encourages them to strive to get the most out of their tutoring experience and get better results, for me, for them and for their parents.…

Not only unraveling inquiries on schoolwork, I believe it is important for them to understand the concepts behind a text or maths questions, such as correlated themes of a text. By offering a new perspective to students, a tutor does need a high level of patience to answer further questions. A tutor should also give honest feedback and encourage…

From the perspective of a past student who's worked with tutors. I've found the best environment to learn is one that feels inviting and open to questions. I hope I can build such an environment where students do not feel worried about asking questions or use me as a resource to aid their learning. Furthermore, I think it's paramount that a tutor…

Study the student and know his or her pros and cons. I would say master the pros whilst teaching the pros. Divide the activities and show the student that learning isn't a burden its much of a relief at the end of the day because goals can be reached easier once you know better. One of the most important things a tutor can do is be patient and supportive. Different people learn different things in different ways, and at different rates. I think the first and most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to identify their strengths or weaknesses. This allows both the student and the tutor to have a clear vision of where the student is sitting now. From this point, the tutor can then construct a suitable study goal with the student and build up their knowledge step by…

Inside KnoxfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Paige worked on building speed and accuracy with double-digit addition and subtraction, as well as practising mental maths strategies for complementary numbers to ten.

Year 11 student Lily focused on balancing thermochemical equations in Chemistry and explored the production process and environmental impact of various fuels.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Daniel tackled problems involving definite integrals—such as estimating area under curves—and reviewed differentiation techniques using chain rule applications in preparation for VCE exams.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working ahead in VCE Maths Methods left some school assignment problems incomplete, which meant that gaps lingered and couldn't be addressed until the next session.

In senior Chemistry, one student often delayed sending lab reports to the tutor before class—"If Sarah can send me the report a day earlier, we'll save time for feedback"—resulting in less time to tackle misconceptions or extend her analysis.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student's tendency to rely on hands or number lines during subtraction led to hesitation when faced with numbers above 20; this slowed mental calculation and caused uncertainty when new combinations appeared.

Recent Achievements

One Knoxfield tutor noticed a big shift with Sarah in Year 12 Chemistry—she's now coming to sessions ready with her own questions and even prepares materials ahead of time, showing far more initiative than before.

Another high school student recently started pinpointing and correcting her own homework mistakes during lessons, something she hadn't done independently until now.

In a primary session, a younger learner who previously hesitated with vertical addition is now breezing through problems quickly and rarely makes errors.

Last week, Sarah finished her practical report without needing any extra support from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Rowville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carrington Primary School.
