Believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is connect with the student and understand how the student learns and tailor their tutoring according to that style. I also believe it's very important for tutors to be patient and considerate when students are learning. I believe that I can teach in a fun, enjoyable and visual manner…

The biggest thing would be to help students understand that ignorance is not failure. Just because they don't know something "basic", that does not mean they are worse than others, or are stupider, or are not going to succeed. It simply means they were not taught in a way that makes sense to them. This could be for a number of reasons, and not…

A tutor can provide support both in academic and studying mentality for students. Being teachers of high volume classes would make them difficult to follow each students’ progress; but as a tutor, it would be possible to follow students’ improvement, clearly justify their strengths and weaknesses and provide advices to help them overcome their…

A tutor needs to listen to a student, to understand what the best methods of learning will be, and needs to adapt their teaching to work for any student, rather than just forcing a student into a single mindset. I explain things very carefully, with multiple ways of looking at something, so I am quite flexible in trying to work with a student. I…

The tutor needs to care about the student's learning. They need to understand the way each student learns best and mould their pedagogy to fit the student. The tutor needs to be able to recognise consistency in errors so that they can make the student aware of where they are going wrong and can help fix it. The tutor also needs to be patient and…

I believe a great tutor goes beyond just increasing a student's marks- they are able to act as a mentor and oversee a student's education holistically. For example, I also guided one of my previous students through his year 12 year, helping him with the university admissions process and scholarship applications, where he is now studying…

Be patient with them; if they don’t understand what you are teaching them, find another way to help them reach a better understanding, may need to be creative in your approach. Listen to what they are asking you. Don’t just tell them how to do it, help them understand why and how it should be done. As a recent high school graduate and current…

I think a good tutor not only teaches a student concepts and material but also shows them how they can learn most effectively independently as well in the absence of a tutor. Great tutors support their students and instill self-belief into them, that they can do hard things. I am methodical, personable and love problem solving. I have the ability…

A tutor can help create a safe environment for a child to voice their concerns with learning which they may feel unable to do in a class setting. Having one-on-one tutor sessions can also help a child to target exactly what they are struggling with. A tutor also has more time with that student to assess what they are good at in order to keep…

Is build the student's confidence, explain things clearly, and create a safe space where they feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. As a tutor, I believe the core priority is to support the student’s learning in the most effective and personalised way possible. Building a student’s confidence is just as important as helping them achieve higher marks, as the two often go hand in hand. Having experienced the benefits of tutoring myself in high school, I understand firsthand…

Inside KooragangTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Tyler focused on fraction equivalence and telling the time to the quarter hour, using clock-face diagrams for practice.

In Year 7, Tyler completed his maths booklet in preparation for a grading exam, working specifically on multiplying decimals and rounding numbers up and down.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Sarah reviewed HSC past paper questions with an emphasis on interpreting normal distributions (including z-scores) and applying the 68-95-99.7 rule to real data sets.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11, exam nerves repeatedly disrupted performance—"she knows all the content well, but when gets into an exam she over complicated problems and stresses which hinders her performance."

During algebra sessions with a Year 7 student, layout and organization in their workbook became an obstacle; messy work made it harder to catch calculation errors without a calculator.

In another senior lesson on standard deviation for the HSC, steps were not memorized, so tackling unfamiliar questions proved daunting.

After missing homework in primary maths, one student couldn't spot patterns with decimals—this left gaps that slowed progress during place value drills.

Recent Achievements

One Kooragang tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 7 student who previously relied heavily on calculators for algebra—now, he's working through problems step-by-step and showing all his workings without prompting.

In a recent high school session, another student who once hesitated to make decisions during simultaneous equations confidently chose her own solving method and explained her reasoning.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who struggled with telling time managed to complete an entire worksheet independently this week—a first for her since starting tutoring.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mayfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mayfield West Public School.
