Science Tutor Karabar, NSW
I think tutoring is so much more than just helping a student improve their maths or science skills. It’s about building up motivation and self-confidence, and teaching students valuable skills they can apply to their learning later in life. For example: identifying what they are struggling to understand, asking questions confidently, and coming…

Inside KowenTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Noah focused on linear equations and an introduction to quadratic equations, then worked through sequences and series using real examples.

Year 7 Ari tackled grade 8 statistics topics including mean, median, mode, and box-and-whisker plots, as well as understanding outliers in data sets.

For a primary example, Year 6 Josh practiced simplifying fractions and converting them to decimals with step-by-step problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Mathematics, incomplete homework and a lack of shown working made it difficult to spot where misunderstandings in algebra and quadratic equations arose—"he needs to show his thinking on the page when solving problems."

For a Year 12 English essay, deleting drafts after feedback led to lost progress; the reluctance to share new versions meant editing could not be fully supported before submission.

Meanwhile, a primary student's messy layout in fraction work resulted in repeated simplification errors, while a senior English student's avoidance of planning steps left narrative responses unfinished and disjointed.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Kowen noticed one high school student who previously struggled to link quotes to thesis statements now confidently annotates texts and connects evidence back to his essay argument without prompting.

Another high schooler, after feeling unsure about linear equations, started using graph paper independently to visualize solutions and asked targeted questions about exam strategies—a big shift from waiting passively for help.

Meanwhile, a younger student who used to hesitate with open-ended writing tasks recently wrote two full exercises using his own adjectives and adverbs once given structured scaffolding, showing real growth in independence and creativity.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Queanbeyan-Palerang Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Queanbeyan East Public School.
