I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them to learn for themselves. It is easy to rote memorize a formula or a text, but to be able to teach someone how they can teach themselves and to show them how to problem solve so that they can attack problems independently is far more valuable I believe my strengths as a…

I believe that the most important thing is to empower the students so they feel as if they are able to excel in their studies. Secondly, a tutor should be able to teach students in a way that allows the student to become confident in their studies. Finally, a tutor should be able to help mentor students through their academic pursuits. I am…

A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. If you have a basic idea of the student mindset you can develop techniques to make them understand the subject in a way they don't find it hard. Gamification…

Personally, being adaptable and flexible in your teaching is the most important thing a tutor can do for any student. As individuals, we all learn at a different pace through a variety of mediums. Hence, it is important to easily recognise this and cater your teaching for each student. This creates a personalised and catered experience which is…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to guide them academically and aid their learning outside of their classroom. I believe it is important for tutors to help achieve the students academic goals, and be a mentor that they can rely on anytime. My strength is that I am able to relate to students who struggle with studies,…

As a tutor you need to provide the individual with problem solving skills to allow them to recognise when a situation is difficult and ways in which they can go about the problem or situation in an effective way to gain insight. This relates to when the child may have a difficult problem for which they can break things down into smaller more…

A tutor possesses many pivotal roles in a student's journey to tertiary levels. I believe the single most crucial contribution a tutor can make is to fan the flame. If a student gives up on their own ability despite genuine interest, then their potential will be lost. A tutor has the unique capability, and responsibility, to recognise and…

Empathy is key. If a tutor can show how learning certain topics can help a student in the future, it keeps the student's interest held in the subject for longer. What really helps is to periodically give some positive feedback to the student about their progress - how he or she has improved in the past 3 months, or month, for example. Because of…

Have a lot of patience and not get frustrated. Find a way of explaining or doing something that the child understands. Not giving up. I have a lot a…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and create a safe space for the student. When tutors don't listen it'll be a waste of time for both parties. This can be very hard because sometimes students may not be able to pinpoint what they don't understand or they might just feel a bit embarrassed. This is where…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to engage in thorough discussions about their thought processes, providing real-time feedback. There is a quote by William Butler Yeats that captures the essence of what I believe is crucial for a tutor: "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." This means that a tutor's role is not just to transfer information to the student, but to spark their curiosity and interest in learning. Therefore, the most important…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence and foster independent thinking. Local Reviews

After the last session Mia said she was happy with Sam and didn't want to change to anyone else. Sam is very bright and Mia will never be an advanced Maths student but they seem to have worked out how to communicate and that just builds her confidence so she doesn't see a difficult question and get overwhelmed. Sam is also very punctual and communicates well with us as well. Even the dog likes him now.

Inside Kurraba PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lily worked on area of triangles using decimal and fractional multiplication, then tackled unknown side problems with practical examples.

For Year 8, Ava focused on congruency tests for triangles and quadrilaterals, using diagrams to identify key properties and revisited composite area and coordinate plane questions from her school homework.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Emily reviewed trigonometric ratios in preparation for upcoming assessments and practiced recognizing different angle relationships—complementary, co-interior, and alternate angles—through targeted problem sets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often hesitated to attempt algebraic problem-solving questions, preferring decimals instead of setting out working for equations—this slowed skill growth in algebra.

In a senior year, "she frequently needed to refer back to notes for specific ratios," which interrupted focus during trigonometry practice and made revision less efficient.

For a Year 9 geometry task, the tutor observed that skipping clear layout meant errors went unnoticed until answers were checked together.

One student's tendency to avoid showing steps—especially with calculations involving area or conversions—meant time was lost retracing logic instead of moving forward with new material.

Recent Achievements

A Kurraba Point tutor recently noticed a big change in one Year 10 student: after struggling with time management in past Olympiad exams, she completed this term's paper more confidently and finished within the time limit, needing less guidance to spot her own errors during review.

In Year 11 maths, Charlie now tackles past papers independently—he highlights key concepts on his resources sheet and no longer needs notes for most questions, a shift from earlier sessions where he hesitated to work alone.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who was reluctant to explain her reasoning is now much more open about sharing her thought process when solving geometry problems.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Loreto Kirribilli.
