Competence in mathematics comes down to practice and I believe that a tutor has to constantly encourage the student to practice and develop this skill. A tutor has to teach the content to the student in an efficient manner so that the student can also gain an interest in maths. A tutor has to be very approachable and has to have good communication…

Be an attentive listener then explain the concept in the way your student will best understand it. It is imperative to first observe where your student's thought process is going wrong and subsequently resolve your student's doubts by communicating effectively and calmly. Patience, most tutors give up after their students don't follow along with…

For example, certain students are only receptive to going through lots of practice problems, whereas others prefer to spend much more time solidifying their theoretical understanding of…

As stated previously, the most important thing I can do for a student is explaining to them thoroughly the fundamental concepts of a topic. I personally believe this is the most effective way of learning. In addition, I believe I can not only give extra through my own personal experiences, but also convey this in an extremely friendly and warming…

Probably to make sure they understand the underlying material rather than just giving the answers. Helping them through problems, and actually encouraging and motivating them along without just revealing the answers will help develop their problem solving skills, making the next problems easier to overcome. I adapt to specific student's different…

Everything starts with guidance. Words are so powerful. So the main duty for a tutor is to give the key points to the student and make the student love the subject. So if you give the right guidance to the student they will be more courageous in the following courses. Because i was a honours student both in high school and university, i believe…

That way, the student is willing to learn new concepts, thus fostering a sense of improvement. I like to apply a variety of different methods of teaching to a student. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to guide them and correct their mistakes. This is essential because incorrect approaches can hinder their learning. By providing clear guidance and constructive feedback, a tutor helps students build a solid foundation and develop confidence in their abilities. Being a tutor in my Year 9 of…

Tutors can provide a one-on-one situation where they're able to realise the students weaknesses and target those areas. They can also be someone else for the students to ask questions where they may be too shy or unable to during a large classroom environment. Tutoring can also help reinforce content that students learnt that day or week. I am a…

I believe that boosts a student's confidence in the school environment as they are receiving additional help from outside. This allows them to enjoy their time at school and develop positive learning habits. All of these effects will result in better grades for a student, once again fostering more confidence, and cycling back to better grades. I…

Growth - It's not just about academic success, it's about the idea that, as a Tutor, it's your duty to make sure the students grow in their chosen subject. This involves understanding the student's strengths and weaknesses, their willingness to work hard and have fun, and enjoyment in the topic. Genuineness and Inspiration - A student can…

The most important thing for a tutor to do is not to continuously teach a concept but to teach it once (if the student has not learnt properly from school) and solidify that knowledge. The most important thing about tutoring is to ensure the students learn strategies to learn new mathematical concepts, so they can succeed on their own. This is because if a tutor were to consistenly helep a student by giving answers, the tutor is not going to accompany the students into their exams, and so the students may feel lost without the…

Inside Kyle BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Grace focused on finding fractions of whole numbers and converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages.

Year 7 Olivia worked through algebraic expressions, including solving for unknowns in equations and simplifying terms.

For Year 8 Ethan, lessons covered measurement concepts such as unit conversions and reviewing data types like categorical versus numerical data, using real-world examples from his schoolwork.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 mathematics, a student showed hesitance in using correct terminology under time pressure; as one tutor noted, "she relied on memorisation rather than understanding when applying indices rules," which made scientific notation and unit conversions especially challenging during closed-book tasks.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner struggled to lay out algebraic solutions clearly—working on grid paper instead of lined paper, as required for exams, led to messy calculations and errors in linear relationships.

In primary maths, confusion between units (grams vs kilograms) slowed progress with word problems involving conversions.

When asked to read questions aloud, one Year 4 student needed frequent reminders, resulting in overlooked instructions mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Kyle Bay recently noticed some strong progress with high school students: one Year 11 student, who used to get stuck on trig proofs, now confidently recognises when to use sine or cosine rules without hesitation.

In a different session, a Year 12 biology student who struggled with structuring answers has started using clear frameworks for responses after targeted practice.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised their tutor by asking for hints—something new—then persisted through several tricky perimeter problems instead of giving up early.

Last week, that same student worked out the missing side lengths without any prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as South Hurstville—or at your child's school (with permission), like Connells Point Public School.
