A tutor's job is to fuel their students' love for learning, make them independent, and lend them a hand when it is needed. A tutor has to be available for a student and has to be a concrete source of education. I am capable of explaining a concept to students in multiple different ways, which directly aids their understanding. I am very…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to approach learning in a way that is self sufficient. Understanding content is important for the time, but ultimately, a tutor should leave the student with the skills to know how to understand content when the tutor is no longer there. I am patient, persistent and…

A tutor should identify the students' areas of weakness and focus on helping the students gain knowledge in these areas rather than teaching the student what they already know. When you toss your fishing line into the water, you may have to wait hours to catch your first fish. When caring for a plant, you must water it frequently for several…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their understanding, confidence, and independence. A tutor should explain concepts clearly, adapt to the student’s learning style, and create a supportive environment where the student feels comfortable asking questions. Ultimately, the goal is not just to help them with…

Be patient with them and encourage them to do their best. Consistency is key and results don't just appear overnight, trust the process and at the end all anyone can ask of you is to do your best. Another big thing is to always be honest with them, whether that means admitting that you don't know something (but can find out for them) or letting…

Tutoring is very different to a typical classroom setting. Each class is unique and solely focused on the one student. This one-to-one learning experience is something many students wouldn’t normally get in a classroom. Naturally, they’ll be able to ask as many questions as they want. As a result, you’ll feel you’re making a real…

I think a teacher should continually assess teaching and solicit feedback from students so that he/she can adapt teaching style to their needs and increase effectiveness. Be a friend. This is how I was taught by my tutors and this is how I taught as well. If there is a deeper bond than that of just a student and teacher, the student really shines. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student understand a topic. The most important thing is to be a tutor if she can develop these abilities in his student. 1. why they are studying a particular subject? 2. Science is not a burden…

I think a tutor's role goes beyond simply offering solutions to problems; instead, they should steer students towards finding answers and ensure a solid grasp of the required steps. Additionally, adaptability is crucial, as teaching methods should be flexible to accommodate diverse learning styles. A tutor ought to be non-judgmental, patient, and…

We were all very impressed with Trent, Tamoe in particular. He was very patient and sought out a real connection with Tamoe. This really helped to get Tamoe to focus and listen. Tamoe is very keen to book in more time with Trent when school goes back.

Inside LakembaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Steven focused on revision questions provided by his school, including algebra and earlier topics for consolidation.

In Year 10, Yara worked through probability problems and tackled data analysis questions using examples from recent classwork.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student completed addition and subtraction with 4-digit numbers, practising mental strategies and written methods to build accuracy.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student's lesson revealed that time management is a major obstacle—"we just need a bit more time to explain and understand harder concepts," noted one tutor, highlighting how rushed explanations left gaps in understanding advanced algebra.

In Year 7, skipping written working in division and multiplication ("doesn't write all working down") led to small errors compounding, making review difficult and costing marks.

Meanwhile, a primary student avoided asking for help when unsure about fractions, finishing work but hesitating to communicate confusion until prompted. Each of these moments resulted in missed learning opportunities or extra correction time.

Recent Achievements

One Lakemba tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to speak up, but now clearly voices when she's confused about trigonometry problems—making it easier to address tricky steps together.

In another session, a Year 9 boy who used to get stuck quietly on two-stage probability questions started explaining exactly where he was lost, and even worked through tree diagrams independently after some guidance.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student recently tackled long division without reminders for each step, showing he now remembers the full process and can check his own work before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lakemba Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Holy Spirit Catholic College.
