Tutors should personalise their teaching for each of their students. This involves understanding how a student learns best in order to cater to their learning needs and habits. For example, I find that some students prefer particular types of examples over others, and this informs me about how I can best explain new concepts to them. I've tutored…

Inside LalorTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Aiden completed an assessment and then focused on understanding decimals, using number lines to help visualise place value.

Year 8 student Emily worked through linear relations, including finding gradients and x- and y-intercepts, followed by graphing equations.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Jason prepared for his exam by practising algebraic techniques such as simplifying algebraic fractions and working with perfect squares and the difference of squares.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student hesitated to attempt harder algebra questions, giving up quickly when unsure—"too many times he has just given up when the question is too hard or he does not understand it." This reluctance meant missed opportunities to develop resilience and left gaps in understanding, especially with worded problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 biology student struggled to summarise processes like mitosis and meiosis; lack of interest made recall difficult and diagrams incomplete.

In Year 4 maths, one child often skipped drawing graphs properly when tired, resulting in messy work that made later revision confusing and less effective.

Recent Achievements

One Lalor tutor noticed a real shift in Priya's approach to her high school maths—she now remembers to label units in geometry problems, something she often overlooked before, and tackles simultaneous equations confidently using both substitution and elimination methods.

Another high school student who used to get stuck on worded algebra questions has begun deciphering them independently after a few guided examples, moving from hesitation to self-correction during sessions.

Meanwhile, Sophie (primary) improved her times tables speed dramatically, dropping from 41 seconds to just 31, and now carefully checks tricky ones instead of rushing through.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lalor Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Peter Lalor Secondary College.
