As a tutor you need to provide the individual with problem solving skills to allow them to recognise when a situation is difficult and ways in which they can go about the problem or situation in an effective way to gain insight. This relates to when the child may have a difficult problem for which they can break things down into smaller more…

As a tutor it is vital that they are encouraging and always find solutions to help a student who may find a certain aspects of a subject difficult or they may not like. It is also important as a tutor to listen and respond to the students needs and goals, and be organised to set those small stepping stones to help the student to achieve that. My…

The most important thing a tutor can do is support students in a way that builds their confidence, not makes them feel like they’re lacking. Helping them understand concepts without making them feel judged or “behind†is key. A good tutor creates a safe, comfortable space where students feel okay to ask questions, and make…

The most important thing a tutor can do is not only help them through school, but be encouraging and not make students feel less than. This enables them to feel supported through their academic journey from a person who recently gone through their struggles, not just by teachers and parents. Understanding them and reminding them about their strengths. Some students are shy and some are not as smart as others. So, it is important to know their abilities and be able to encourage them, especially when they are unmotivated and depressed. My two greatest strengths as a tutor are positivity and problem-solving. A tutor should be able to explain concepts in a manner which allows students to understand the concepts and apply it elsewhere. A tutor should assist students in understanding concepts on a deeper level, rather than just rote learning. Furthermore, a tutor should be passionate in what they teach. A teacher that is passionate about subjects will…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them to learn for themselves. It is easy to rote memorize a formula or a text, but to be able to teach someone how they can teach themselves and to show them how to problem solve so that they can attack problems independently is far more valuable I believe my strengths as a…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are motivating the students to learn on their own as well as arming them with the tools and study skills. The motivation to learn is critical, since the tutor can teach the material, but at the end of the day, it is the student who has to master it. Without such…

The most important things I can provided to the student are an approachable, enriching learning environment. An enriching learning environment is like a petri-dish full of nutrients. The role of tutors is to help the students absorb as much of these 'nutrients' (i.e. knowledge and skills) as they can in an effective and enjoyable way. I believe my…

The fun part of my job is getting to know my students and getting to understand them. Inside Lane Cove WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Georgia reviewed her recent NAPLAN paper to identify and discuss areas for improvement.

In Year 9, Tom focused on probability with single events and practiced constructing and interpreting linear graphs from algebraic equations.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ruby tackled simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods, as well as exploring investments and loans in the context of credit cards.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly arrived without her test book, which limited review of past assessments and slowed feedback on algebra exam technique; as a tutor noted, "she needed reminders to set out all working clearly and avoid redoing calculations."

In Year 7 mathematics, one student hesitated to write down solutions, preferring mental calculations even when asked for full working. This habit left logic gaps that made it harder to spot where confusion with negatives crept in.

Meanwhile, a primary student twice missed submitting writing homework, so lesson time shifted from skill-building to catching up—momentum was lost before ideas could really take shape.

Recent Achievements

A Lane Cove West tutor noticed Harry, a Year 9 student, now lays out his answers systematically in maths, where he used to jumble steps and lose marks for working errors.

Georgia, who struggled with visualising three-dimensional objects last term, recently translated elevation drawings into accurate 3D shapes during her session without prompting.

In English, a senior student who was previously hesitant to accept feedback on essays has started actively rewriting topic sentences and openly asks for suggestions when revising her discursive writing pieces.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as West Chatswood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mowbray Public School.
