From my experience, one of the most important thing I can do is finding out the weakness of students and helping them overcome that weakness instead of letting them away from it. Tutors should be honest, too when there is the question that we do not know. Last but not least, tutors should help students build confidence and give support as much as…

Teaching a methodology in such a way that the student only has to follow the steps to solve a problem. Understand the body language and some sounds that students do when they understand something or when they do not understand. It is possible that students do not tell me but I can realize that. I think it is important to be organized because the…

A student is a kind of Variable. All are different kinds/versions. Some are good with numbers, some are good with core theories, and some are good with implementation. I would love to first know the student well. Then I would like to feed the knowledge step by step. I make sure that he/she enjoys the subject instead of dislikes the course. I am…

In my opinion, being a person that students are comfortable with to reach out for help is one of the most important things. A tutor should be there to assist them, not add stress or pressure to them. I also think it is important for tutors to motivate the students to learn, instead of just giving answers, and in motivating them, tutors should be…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

(1) Value of patience: Being a tutor/teacher means I have to face a range of students whose level of understanding completely vary. My students will emotionally accept me only if I am patient enough. (2) Value of resilience: Teaching is very flexible as I should be active to explore the strengths and weaknesses of my students, finally develop…

The most important thing is trust that both tutor and student should have on each other. An ease of asking questions and making mistakes is another very important thing. Its okay to make mistakes but if your student is afraid of you , they would never ask questions and will be afraid to make mistakes so the tutor will never be able to…

I find the part where students are able to regain their confidence and find motivation in the subject as most rewarding for the tutor. It is absolutely thrilling to witness to process of my students overcoming the fear of the subject and to slowly learn to accept and enjoy the subject, thus learning even more effectively, in the end. My experience…

Become students’ friends so you can lead the children to the book, most students don’t want study because the teacher is too strict and always pushing them, if the tutor can become their friends, they can lead the student to study voluntary. It is very important as a tutor to understand your student. Be his silent friend and connect with him. Read his mental abilities, his interest, observe his qualities and disabilities, his way of learning things. And then try to impart the teaching depending on all these factors. Each student is different and so is the method of teaching. Teaching…

Talking to the students and identify their strengths and weaknesses, and hence support them to improve and reach their fullest potential. I always try to adapt my teaching to the students. In my opinion, a tutor must be able to empathize with the student and create a safe space for them. Its important to be constructive and patient especially with the ones that take time to grasp topics. One must keep instructions clear and always strive to empower the child by focusing on their strengths. Engage them instead of lecturing…

The goal of tutoring should be to empower students and thus the primary focus of tuition should be to develop confidence and independence rather than reliance. For this reason, I believe the most important component of tutoring is not working through content, but reflecting and future planning to ensure the student believes they have the skills…

Inside LeabrookTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Priya practised coordinate geometry by calculating line lengths and midpoints on the Cartesian plane, then applied Pythagoras' theorem to solve distance problems.

In Year 10, Jack focused on solving simultaneous equations and working through perimeter and area calculations in geometry, using worked examples to reinforce his understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Armando reviewed bivariate statistics—specifically exponential regression—and completed exam-style questions involving financial models such as loans and superannuation scenarios.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for financial maths exams struggled with organizing a formula sheet and often left working unlabelled—Labelling working and writing a bit bigger / more clearly, especially in this topic where it is easy to make errors copying matrices across, noted one tutor.

In Year 9 algebra, another learner confused variables and sometimes avoided showing steps, which made it difficult to spot calculation slips or build confidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student occasionally doodled during area questions instead of listening and forgot essential materials like notebooks. These habits led to extra time clarifying misunderstandings and missed opportunities for feedback before tests.

Recent Achievements

One Leabrook tutor noticed that a Year 10 student, Armando, has started tackling revision problems independently and even identified specific gaps to discuss with his teacher—this is a big shift from relying solely on guided sessions.

In Year 11, Alia recently completed all her assigned worksheets before the lesson and now pinpoints which steps she finds tricky, instead of waiting for hints; she's also begun keeping a detailed summary notebook by herself.

Meanwhile, a primary student was able to explain why sides in certain shapes are equal after struggling to recognise shape properties earlier this term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burnside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marryatville High School.
