I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to truly understand the student and make them feel supported and comfortable. It's crucial to identify where the student is struggling and where they need support, as well as recognizing their potential. Tailoring the teaching approach to suit the individual needs of each student is key, as I…

The most important role that a tutor can play in the betterment of students is to help them build self-efficacy as the "can-do" attitude solves multiple problems. The self believe helps the student gain confidence which will eventually play a role in their academic learning. The motivation of being successful in gaining mathematical skills often…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to build both understanding and confidence in a student. While improving academic performance is important, students learn best when they feel supported and capable. A good tutor should explain concepts clearly, adapt to each student’s learning style, and create a safe environment where…

I consider patience and dedication to be the most valuable qualities a tutor can provide. The student needs to feel supported in a learning environment to succeed, especially if it is a subject they aren't particularly strong at. As a former HSC student, I honestly felt the 'tough love' approach some tutors had would deter me from wanting to study…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is be supportive. Students are already frustrated when they do not understand something, hence we do not need to add to that by being frustrated at them. In addition, a tutor needs to be flexible. This allows one to better tailor the program to the student's needs and the student's strengths. I…

I consider being empathetic and adaptive for students is highly important. Being empathetic of your students struggles and not putting them down for not understanding is the most important thing a tutor can do for them to ensure they feel comfortable and confident in their learning. Adaptability is also a key component for a tutor as not every…

Drawing from my experience in teaching as a CSR activity, I recognize several essential aspects that I consider crucial in nurturing a student's growth and learning journey. 1. Fostering Understanding: One of the most important things I…

Inspire a genuine passion for the subject, rather than just learning for the sake of school. When students find enjoyment and appreciation in what they're studying, learning becomes easier, and this mindset will benefit them with anything they need to learn in the future. Tutoring is about building a relationship with the student based on trust and respect, making the student feel comfortable enough to ask questions, express their concerns and doubts, which was a key aspect for me when I was learning. Over time, I have learnt that my enthusiasm for the subject is contagious, it kindles a love for the subject in the…

A tutor is someone that a student can rely on for support. They are pragmatic in finding ways to ensure the student has a positive experience with learning. The student is in control, and the tutor is a guide that assists and also facilitates the student to take safe risks, ask questions and completely engage with their learning in ways suitable…

I think a tutor has to be such kind of person who can unwillingly be able to establish himself/ herself as a role model to follow which will guarantee the success of the the student in the future. Not give the answers but help support the learning process and give guidance when the child needs it most. There is a difference between doing all the work for the child and actually teaching how the problem can be approached and observing how the student does it him/herself. There could by many reasons why students come to tutoring: they're struggling to keep up, they want to excel or simply their parents want them to go. No matter the reason, what I think is most important for a tutor to do is to try and make the students actually interested in the content in front of them and then aid them as they grapple with it.…

A tutor needs to be patient and build a healthy learning curve. One of the most important things for a tutor is to be encouraging and positive. Inside LewishamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Liam worked on addition and subtraction using number lines, as well as identifying equality statements and basic counting strategies through interactive games.

In Year 10, Emily focused on BODMAS equations and fractions from her homework before tackling introductory algebra questions involving like terms.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Andrea revised percentage calculations without a calculator and practised the unitary method to solve real-world profit scenarios.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student struggled to show full working in algebra and coordinate geometry, leading to hidden errors; as one tutor observed, "extra attention to detail would help minimise mistakes."

In Year 9, a student often avoided writing out solutions neatly or following class formats, which made it harder to spot where steps went wrong—especially with formula rearrangement.

For a Year 6 learner, forgetting homework and rarely practicing challenging questions limited progress when faced with multi-step division problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 2 student's loss of confidence after setbacks led them to guess answers rather than try new approaches.

Recent Achievements

A Lewisham tutor recently saw Annabelle, a high school student, shift from hesitating with trigonometry to confidently identifying which function—sin, cos, or tan—to use and starting to rearrange equations independently, something she found confusing before.

In another session, Liam (Year 3) began writing his maths and diagrams out neatly without prompting; he used to skip steps and rush through work.

Justin, also in high school, was initially unsure about coordinate geometry but after extra practice now works through algebraic operations more smoothly.

Annabelle finished her lesson by solving a full set of angle sum problems with minimal help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Emanuel Tsardoulias Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Christian Brothers' High School Lewisham.
