Ultimately, a tutor only has so much time each week with a student and so I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to help students discover their own affinity for a particular subject and inspire them to carry out their own research. To this end, it is crucial to welcome curiosity and not to limit their imagination by restricting them…

The most important part of tutoring is to make sure the student grasps a concept entirely and doesn't have any gaps in their knowledge before moving onto new topics. It is essential for students to fully comprehend a difficult concept as this will help them remember it better, gain confidence in the topic and lower their stress. Additionally,…

Provide a safe learning space and encourage determination as well as helping them set reasonable academic goals. It is also important that they learn to enjoy learning things. I think my experience as a recent graduate of 2023 is an advantage, as I am able to relate to students on a personal level and have recent experience with the syllabus. In…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to make the student feel at ease with the subject at hand, especially to the point where they begin their own individual methods of inquiry into the subject. A student should never feel under pressure to perform in ways that make them feel discouraged about their own abilities. The consequence of that is…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are motivating the students to learn on their own as well as arming them with the tools and study skills. The motivation to learn is critical, since the tutor can teach the material, but at the end of the day, it is the student who has to master it. Without such…

One of the most important thing a tutor can do for a student, is not only make the subject fun and easier to understand but to make the student believe in himself/herself. Most of the students, do not feel very confident in their own understanding of the subject and hesitate to participate in class discussions. I believe by making the student…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is instill confidence. Many students experience a lack of confidence when they don't perform as well as they hoped in a subject, which can discourage further studying. Being friendly and adapting their teaching speed to the pace of the student. not having one universal teaching style, but altering it is how you keep the student interested and make it easier for them to grasp the concept. For example, using sports examples to explain a physics concept to a high school athlete will keep them engaged longer and add…

I believe achieving high scores isnt everything for a student. Being able to achieve more than that is whats important. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student in my opinion is to give them guidance on how to be successful in the subject we tutor. At the end of the day we only see them once or twice a week. We can't teach them everything. So it is important that we guide them on how to learn and study in order to be successful. I think it's really important for a tutor to offer intrinsic motivation to a student. I find that alot of students are easily academically discouraged. A good tutor should help their student develop a love for what they are learning. When this is done successfully, this has a knock-on effect on the student's results as they are more engaged with the content they are learning. This starts with the tutor being passionate about the content they are teaching and being determined to push the student…

Inside LilyfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Talia practised using Pythagoras' theorem to find missing side lengths and worked on rearranging equations in geometry problems.

In Year 9, Keira focused on solving challenging trigonometry questions and reviewed her recent test on probability, also revisiting how to simplify and expand algebraic expressions.

Greta, in Year 11, concentrated on differentiation—covering the product, chain, and quotient rules—and extended this by finding derivatives of inverse functions during calculus practice.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly forgot to bring their maths homework, so written work was scattered and difficult to track—"work is in one place only if homework comes every lesson."

In Year 10, a student tended to skip writing out working for easier algebra questions; as noted, "she lost marks by just writing the answer or partial steps, especially in assessments."

Meanwhile, a senior biology student left assignments until the last minute. This led to rushed note-taking and incomplete reports. The pressure of unfinished tasks lingered into class discussions, making it harder to consolidate concepts and scientific terminology under time constraints.

Recent Achievements

One Lilyfield tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to avoid showing her working now confidently writes out every step and explains her reasoning as she solves trig and algebra problems.

Another high school student, after struggling with quadratic equations, managed to solve for intercepts independently across all question types—a clear turnaround from earlier sessions where she needed significant prompting.

At the primary level, a Year 4 student surprised both himself and his tutor by not only understanding fractions on his first day learning them at school but also improving his timetables since last lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Inner West Council Library and History Leichhardt Branch—or at your child's school (with permission), like Inner Sydney Montessori School, Lilyfield.
