I believe that there is no easy way in tutoring, the same as there is no easy way to get the answer. Whenever they are stuck it is our job to guide them through and companying them along. Whenever there are difficult times, give out the answers is never the way to solve the problem. I'm very patient when teaching my students, I wouldn't mind…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are make learning feel less stressful, build a student’s confidence, and adapt to their needs. It’s not just about explaining concepts, it’s about creating a space where they feel comfortable asking questions without fear of judgment. Everyone learns differently, so I try to adjust my…

Study the student and know his or her pros and cons. I would say master the pros whilst teaching the pros. Divide the activities and show the student that learning isn't a burden its much of a relief at the end of the day because goals can be reached easier once you know better. Not only unraveling inquiries on schoolwork, I believe it is important for them to understand the concepts behind a text or maths questions, such as correlated themes of a text. By offering a new perspective to students, a tutor does need a high level of patience to answer further questions. A tutor should also give honest feedback and encourage…

Understand what the student is struggling with and help with an exclusive technique to best help them. A generalised approach to help students understand concepts is very ineffective as each individual is different. From the perspective of a past student who's worked with tutors. I've found the best environment to learn is one that feels inviting and open to questions. I hope I can build such an environment where students do not feel worried about asking questions or use me as a resource to aid their learning. Furthermore, I think it's paramount that a tutor…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is be patient and supportive. Different people learn different things in different ways, and at different rates. A tutor must cater for that, and not skip over important things that students have not yet understood. A tutor must use the method of explaining/teaching that students will understand. I…

Simply put, identify the gaps in knowledge that are preventing a student from understanding and mastering a concept and thus targeting them. The most important and primary action that a tutor needs to do is to know his/her student as it elicits the tutor a good background about the student strenghts and weaknesses. This factor leads the tutor to construct an study method that is personalised and programmed based on the given student, this manifest in a more efficient and high quality…

I am absolutely thrilled with Hayden's performance as a tutor for my daughter. His questioning techniques are wonderful with encouraging my daughter to think more deeply about what she is learning. My daughter is feeling more confident with her mathematical problem solving skills now.
Sharon, Lysterfield

Inside LysterfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sahas worked on division using grouping with visual aids, and also practiced converting mixed fractions to improper fractions.

Year 8 student Luan focused on graphing linear equations by finding gradients and intercepts from algebraic expressions, along with revising how to solve equations involving positive and negative integers.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Oliver tackled trigonometry for finding missing lengths and angles, as well as reviewing bearings and elevation problems in worded contexts.

Recent Challenges

Messy written work and lack of neat layout have repeatedly affected accuracy in Years 7–10, especially when working through long division or algebraic expansions—"reminding Ollie to keep calculations neat, and in correct columns to minimise mistakes" was a consistent note.

In Year 8 trigonometry, formula selection sometimes stalled progress until prompted by the tutor.

Several primary and lower secondary students avoided tackling harder worded questions or focused only on familiar times tables, making it difficult to transfer skills to new problem types; for example, one student struggled with converting word problems into equations during algebra revision.

When focus wavered, exercises often went unfinished.

Recent Achievements

A Lysterfield tutoring session saw one high school student, Ollie, move from making frequent mistakes with algebraic fractions to accurately solving balance method equations after targeted revision—he now checks each step carefully, something he often skipped before.

Another tutor noted that Luan, who previously struggled to focus and hesitated with negative integers, was able to complete all the adding exercises independently using counters and number lines.

For a younger student, Sahas, lessons using iPad visuals have paid off; where he once lost his place during division problems, he now stays engaged and can solve division by 3 and 5 using grouping pictures without reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ferntree Gully Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lysterfield Primary School.
