To make the subject interesting to their students and instill a love for learning and imparting knowledge in them, so that they don't consider learning a chore and they genuinely look forward to learning. Their perception of what "learning" means changes to something more positive so that they look forward to it rather than shy away from it; this…

I also believe in establishing short and long term learning goals to ensure each tutoring lesson has an overall objective. My strengths as a tutor is that I'm passionate about learning…

The most important thing is to understand each student as a person so that you can personalise their learning and teach to their strengths. This comes with communicating and listening to what that student has to say to you. I like to ask students questions about their background with the subject, or related subjects and what they're hoping to…

It is important that besides explaining a topic, a I can provide the student with strategies on how to approach exam questions and assignments. Additionally, I will listen to the student so I can tailor my tutoring to their individual needs and…

I think it would be acknowledging the difficulty in subjects to know that they aren't alone with their difficulties and also being able to explain to them the content of their subjects in new ways that makes sense to them. And also make them feel confident in their abilities as well as teaching them a new confidence of autonomy when it comes to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and understanding with them, as what is obvious or easy for you may not be so for your student. Learn not to show annoyance in your speech or body language as it can demotivate the students and make them perform even worse. A tutor must collaborate with the student, as the…

For me, making sure the student does not feel intimidated is vital, especially if they are working with a private tutor. If a student feels scared or intimidated towards their tutor, it will refrain them from clearing their doubt or asking questions. Hence, it is important that tutors make sure the students feel like they are in a comfortable…

Help them reach their full potential without doing all the work for them; I think it is important to let them do some hard work now and again so they can appreciate it more when they are congratulated for their success, and so that they are not 'coddled' into thinking other people will do all their work for them. It is very easy for students to feel disheartened if initial targets are not achieved, and hence as a tutor it is important for me to continue motivating students to reach their goals. I think a tutor can give a student confidence, that a student doesn't need to be intimidated by a STEM class. The general attitude that these subject are 'too hard' or that a student 'will never use these skills again' sets up bright students for failure before they even set foot in a classroom. The most important thing a tutor can do is boost a…

Education is the single most powerful tool that can shape the way our youth thinks. It plays an instrumental role in moulding a child's perspective on almost everything. I think that if a tutor can initially convince their student why what they’re studying is important, then the relationship will be much more amicable. I also think it’s important that we make sure they’re really understanding key concepts, rather than making it seem like they do to avoid embarrassment around or working harder, I have seen…

Inside MansfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Amelia focused on drafting her English assignment, working through key points and structuring her response.

Year 7 student Dekota revised term content with particular attention to order of operations and solving worded percentage problems using different methods.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Jenny practised algebra by finding the value of unknowns in equations and also tackled measurement questions involving area and volume of shapes.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student found it challenging to recall formulas for area and volume during geometry tasks, often pausing mid-question to check notes—she needed prompting to remember which formula fit the shape.

In Year 11 algebra, another student relied heavily on calculators for basic operations like rounding off or sign changes, making it difficult to build fluency without digital aids.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner hesitated with long division when borrowing was involved; confusion over layout meant answers were abandoned half-finished until guided step-by-step.

These habits led to lost time or uncertainty in independent problem-solving moments.

Recent Achievements

One Mansfield tutor noticed a real shift with Dekota in Year 9 maths: she now asks questions when stuck, instead of staying silent and guessing—something she rarely did before.

Taysha, also in high school, recently caught her own mistake on an order of operations problem and then explained the correct steps back to the tutor without prompting.

In Year 6 English, Amelia became much more focused during assignment editing sessions; she listened carefully to feedback and suggested her own changes after some guidance.

Last week, Taysha chose a new strategy for tackling algebra questions on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Gravatt Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Brisbane Adventist College.
