I believe that making every session meaningful, productive but entertaining is key to learning. A tutor should make sure that the student is well-engaged in the session but still focussing on their weaknesses and strengths. A tutor should make a personalized learning experience for every student and build a relationship of trust with the student.…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help the student become **independent in their thinking**. It’s easy to just show solutions, but that creates dependency. A good tutor instead builds the student’s ability to approach problems on their own—how to think, how to break things down, and how to recover when they’re stuck. That…

A tutor has to be patient and welcoming for their students. The reason these students come for tutoring is because they face difficulty keeping up with school. So they should be given the space to understand at their own pace, in their own method and a teacher needs to recognize that. We need to recognize the method which we choose to teach a…

The goal of tutoring should be to empower students and thus the primary focus of tuition should be to develop confidence and independence rather than reliance. For this reason, I believe the most important component of tutoring is not working through content, but reflecting and future planning to ensure the student believes they have the skills…

I believe that getting high grades in school is not the most important goal for my student (although this is something we work towards), but rather what is most important for me as a tutor is to see them learn, progress and improve each time. I want to teach them the value of hard work while building up their confidence and motivation to tackle…

A tutor has the opportunity to encourage confidence in students. Not solely confidence that they can achieve highly, but confidence that they can give anything a go and learn and improve as they do. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them the skills to be confident in their own learning. I have seen first hand that for a student, struggling at school is not only academically unadvisable, but can cause great anxiety and difficulty at school. Some skills come easier to some students than others, and there…

I feel tutors need to provide constructive feedback for the students, especially in an English essay for example. A good tutor should firstly ensure that the student has a solid grasp of the foundational knowledge underpinning their subject, before moving on to teach more complex concepts. This is because oftentimes a subject's more advanced concepts will draw heavily from assumed foundational knowledge. Additionally a tutor can instill confidence in a…

Inside MardenTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Isabel revised fractions and percentages through targeted worksheets and tackled area and perimeter of circles, often working through visual diagrams.

In Year 9, Ana focused on trigonometry—specifically applying the sine and cosine rules to solve problems involving non-right angled triangles—and also practiced advanced algebraic equation solving using real-world examples.

Meanwhile, Em in Year 10 worked on expanding and factorising quadratics (using sum and product methods), as well as revising REDOX chemistry theory ahead of an upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often got tangled in their thoughts during algebra and worded problems, leading to confusion about when to add or multiply—one tutor noted, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

In Year 10, a student arrived unprepared for test revision after forgetting which units were being assessed; this left her overwhelmed and piecing together topics from online resources instead of focusing on practice.

For a senior folio task, another struggled to convert drafts into a formal document and hesitated to work independently—motivation dropped as deadlines approached, with unfinished homework piling up.

Recent Achievements

One Marden tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student's approach: after months of hesitating to ask for help, she arrived with her own list of questions and managed to work through all of them in one session, even deciding on her own to make a revision notes sheet for an upcoming test.

In Year 11, another student who had struggled with algebraic fractions tried out a new three-step study strategy and used it independently—her latest test score jumped to 80%. Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who typically did mental math silently began talking through his problem-solving steps aloud for the first time during their lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Payneham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marden Senior College.
