This means explaining concepts clearly, adapting to their learning style, and creating a supportive environment where they feel comfortable asking questions. A good tutor should also encourage problem-solving rather than just giving…

I believe that a tutor should be friendly with the student so that the student can freely discuss the problems with his/her tutor. The tutor can use interesting techniques to describe the concepts which will increase the concentration of the student and also his/her eagerness to learn. Again asking the student questions about the topic can help…

That means not only explaining content clearly but also encouraging curiosity, building trust, and providing strategies for independent learning. I think the most significant thing that a tutor can do is to instill confidence in the student, make them able to learn, and independent learners. It's not providing them with the answers but making them see the 'why' about things. A good tutor listens, is attuned to the way of learning of the student, and gets them at ease asking questions and…

I think the important thing for a tutor is to be clear in their concepts so that they can explain and teach their student in a clear and understanding way. As a tutor you need to make sure you test the student so that you know where they stand and then start from there. Evaluating the progress is just as essential. I consider myself a well…

As for me, the most crucial thing should be improving their academic performances while arousing their interest in studying. To be specific, these are what I consider responsible tutorial behaviors. 1. Do sufficient pre-class preparation and make notes for every key point that you are going to talk about in detail. 2. Be patient in class. Think…

I feel the most important things a tutor can do: understand the student, make learning fun and clear and build confidence in them. A tutor should try to think like a student tutor should try to get into the child’s mind, mostly a tutor should try to bend according to the child’s need because if a tutor is just like a machine then they won’t be able to critically analyse where the child is unable to grasp the knowledge so it’s very very important that a tutor should…

The most important thing is to gain a core understanding of the topic, and not just a surface level rote learning of how to solve problems. It's also important to have an understanding of each student and to recognise when to push them and when they've hit a wall (mentally). For me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to become a perfect role model for the students; someone who the student can look up to, live with their skills and guidance, someone who they can trust and rely when they face problems. For me personally, a role of a tutor is not just ensuring good grades for the students but rather…

Inside MaribyrnongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sophia focused on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, as well as converting improper fractions to mixed numbers using visual models.

Year 8 student Jack worked through linear equations with two variables and practiced times tables for fluency.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Mia tackled trigonometric ratios in right-angled triangles and applied Pythagoras' theorem to solve worded geometry problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was assigned Algebraic Fractions homework but left it incomplete, which slowed progress during the next session—he needs to finish the assigned homeworks on Algebraic Fractions.

In Year 11 Biology, one learner tended to rely on memorising definitions instead of connecting concepts using textbook readings and key terms; this led to difficulty answering deeper questions.

For a Year 5 student, written working was often skipped in multiplication problems: "thinks a lot in her head. Does not write working out," making it harder for her to catch errors or remember steps later.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Maribyrnong noticed a big shift with one Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask for help, now confidently voices questions when stuck—this change meant he could work through challenging algebraic fractions without guessing.

Another high schooler recently completed a matrix assignment entirely on his own and presented each step clearly for the first time, following earlier struggles with laying out his solutions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student moved from needing hands-on support for two-digit addition to accurately solving three-digit problems independently and even explaining her steps out loud during the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Maribyrnong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Margaret's Primary School.
