In the short term, it is important to help the student develop an understanding of the ideas behind a topic, rather than just knowing the content. Over the long term, helping the student form an effective study method of their own as well as developing good study habits will be critical to their later success. Aside from my experience and…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is neither explaining to them the concepts nor giving them the solutions to the problems, but rather, guiding them so that they can find the solutions on their own. By doing that, the tutors don't just help the students with those particular problems, but they also help the students…

The most vital thing for a tutor is to assess the level of understanding of the student. Students learn in different ways (some learn best with visual explanations, some learn by analogy, or by pnemonic devices etc) and it is important to understand the best approach for a specific student. By applying the most appropriate teaching techniques for…

I believe a tutor can offer a student so much more that just knowledge; the encouragement of a tutor can unlock a student’s potential and lead them towards consistent success. Tutoring sessions can make a student feel heard and understood which is so important in a student’s journey through self discovery in their schooling years. As a tutor,…

I think rather than trying to cover as much content as possible or only focusing on results, what is more important is the learning process. We need to let students explore different learning methods and encourage them to find the methods that work best for them so that they can be encouraged to take initiative with their studies even without a…

A good tutor can raise interest of the student. Once the student feel interested in the subject, then he/she will be keen on learning new things. In addition, tutoring is more than teaching, and students are more engaged and proactive. I have strong interest in maths and I have my degree in commerce, this would be helpful for students who wanna…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to not only be a source of academic information, but also be a friend. This is ideal for building a close relationship between the tutor and student, allowing for the tutor to create a deeper understanding of their student as a person. This helps the tutor to observe and provide…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to challenge them to think critically and solve problems on their own. Along with challenging students, a tutor must also use positive reinforcements in order to build a student's confidence and keep them motivated. I think the most important things a tutor can do are spark the student’s interest in the subject, explain concepts clearly when something doesn’t make sense, and help remove the fear of making mistakes. When students see that learning is a process of trying, experimenting and eventually finding the answer, they become more confident and open…

The most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s understanding, boost their confidence, and encourage independent thinking. Inside MarsfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Lea focused on algebraic techniques, working through expansion and factorisation questions, as well as discussing accuracy and limits of accuracy using examples from homework.

In Year 10, Jack tackled trigonometric identities and proof-based questions to strengthen understanding ahead of assessments.

For Year 11, Sienna concentrated on solving combinations and permutations problems by breaking down multi-step scenarios, ensuring she could apply these skills to new contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, one student "didn't do homework," which meant new methods in inequalities were not reinforced outside of lessons—gaps showed up when tackling unfamiliar problems.

In Year 10 trigonometry, a reluctance to ask questions led to guessing answers instead of clarifying confusion; as noted, "she needs to be more active in asking questions."

Meanwhile, a senior student repeatedly avoided writing calculation steps in vector proofs, leading to sign errors and lost marks.

Another struggled with exam integration tasks due to careless corrections, erasing rather than confronting mistakes—a habit that cost marks under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Marsfield tutor noted that a Year 11 student recently moved from completing almost all homework correctly, showing she now checks her understanding and attempts problems even when unsure.

In a senior session, another high school student improved her correction rate on HSC-style papers—she now revisits mistakes independently and answers more quickly than before.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who previously hesitated to share ideas is now volunteering her thinking aloud during lessons, making visible steps toward greater classroom participation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Epping Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anthony's Catholic Primary School.
