I feel the strengths as a tutor are to help my students to set a high expectation, which motivates them to work towards that. Another strength would be to be honest and transparent with students about how to succeed. And as a tutor, it is our duty to make sure that students know you believe in them and want them to succeed. I'm a team player. I…

Always know what students need and what's their priority. This means a tutor need to show respect to students. They need to know very well about the students and are wise and knowledgable enough to give good advice and make sure students love listening to the advice. I love to solve questions. If I could make complicated things into easy ones, I'd…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to open a rapport that makes them feel safe and understood, an environment where they are not afraid to try and even not afraid to fail, in the knowledge that with help and direction they can try again and do better. With the acceptance that 1 style (or even 10 styles!) of teaching…

In my opinion, I think that it is important to understand every student is different and has their way of learning. It is important for a tutor to identify and tailor a plan for each student so that they are learning efficiently. For example, as I am a visual and auditory learner, I learn most efficiently by watching lectures and videos and less…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to inspire his inner confidence and nurture his talent. It is worthwhile to bring students to the realization that, nothing is impossible when they apply their minds to anything. Nurturing young minds and sowing seeds that will engender innovation is the ultimate role of a tutor. In this…

Students need to realize that learning is not only limited in the classroom. Lecturing and tutoring not only help the students to understand the knowledge and achieve the academic purpose, but also guide them to construct the way of thinking. As a tutor, it is very important that the teacher becomes an inspiration to the student. The passion with which the tutor teaches the student matters a lot and this also influences the students influence on the subject. I think that a tutor should not limit themselves to just subject knowledge. They should research more on effective teaching methods and strategies that might help them connect to their students more. They should develop practices that make a student's life easier and should understand the individual needs of the students. Often tutors have to…

A tutor can provide little tips and tricks to answering questions, especially in Math. Always be within reach, in terms of communication platforms, so that the student can clarify any doubts at any point in time. A tutor should also be flexible to the timings of the students yet not compromising on other students schedule. I am patient, clear…

From my experience, one of the most important thing I can do is finding out the weakness of students and helping them overcome that weakness instead of letting them away from it. Inside MaylandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Pranavi covered timetables up to 12x and practised recognising basic equivalent fractions using denominators up to 5.

In Year 7, Milly worked on converting fractions to decimals and percentages as well as applying order of operations with division questions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Harrison focused on solving quadratic equations by applying the null factor law and reviewed methods for factorising quadratics in preparation for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7–8 maths, several students relied heavily on written calculation for times tables (e.g., "she needs to work out the answer on paper" for 12 × 12), which slowed progress in fractions and long division.

A tutor noted, "she sometimes puts the 3 in the thousands column instead of hundreds," revealing how layout issues disrupted multi-digit subtraction.

In Year 10 algebra, one student could express answers verbally but struggled to write equations accurately—especially with negative coefficients and variables—often missing crucial signs.

In English, another student's tendency to omit quotation marks or misplace commas made dialogue unclear and marked down her writing.

Recent Achievements

One Maylands tutor noticed Milly, a high school student, now self-corrects her mistakes in algebraic expressions—she highlights like terms and revises her answers without prompting, which was a big shift from needing step-by-step help.

In another session, Harrison demonstrated greater independence in trigonometry by recalling the correct ratios and showing his full working when solving for unknown sides, something he'd hesitated to do previously.

Meanwhile, with younger students, Naba moved from tracing numbers with guidance to writing several digits unaided (2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9) during maths activities.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Peters Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Trinity Gardens School.
