The roll of a tutor is two-fold. Firstly, to help students understand the material they are working with. There are many ways to go about this, but one of the most important roles of a tutor is to be able to bring intuition to the abstract. This in addition to introducing effective methods for solving problems. The second key roll is helping…

It is important that the tutor understands the needs and the gaps that the student has at the beginning of the sessions. An understanding of the needs of the student ensures that key objectives and targets are set with the student to drive ownership. As a tutor, it is also important to constantly assess the impact of my tutoring method in order to…

I think the most important thing is a tutor can do for a student is to build confidence in students in learning certain subjects and provide them with tools to be effective learners. I believe that I have a way of teaching things in a very clear and a simple manner and I also think that I am able to adjust my way of teaching according to the…

The most important this that a tutor can do for a student, is to keep in mind that tutoring is not the same as giving a lecture. That needs to be reflected in the adaptation of the tutoring session to the individual student. This can be done by lowering or raising the level if needed, speeding up or slowing down, and providing precise feedback…

In my opinion, the most important responsibility of a tutor is not to teach specific knowledge or skills but to incite the confidence and curiosity for knowledge in students. Ultimately, a successful tutor is the one who can help students out of their bottlenecks, assists them in studying, and finally equips them with the skills and mindsets for…

A tutor can do tons of things for a student. A tutor can help his/her students learn and also help cultivate student's interests in a particular subject. A tutor can help students debrief what a student went through at school and provide them with different kinds of suggestions based on his/her experiences. When a student struggles to understand a…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student extend beyond academic instruction. While helping students grasp challenging concepts is crucial, equally vital is fostering a supportive and encouraging learning environment. A tutor should adapt teaching methods to suit the student's unique learning style, provide constructive feedback, and…

I feel a tutor must be able to invoke a sense of interest and joy in a students minds for the subject they teach. As a tutor, you are someone who has studied the subject beforehand and are more knowledgeable about the subject than a student who is just starting out. This makes it difficult for tutors to reach their maximum potential while teaching…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to create a space in which the student is comfortable and unafraid to make mistakes. This is extremely important in not only allowing the student to learn to the best of their ability, but to be able to question their own logic, problem-solve, and actively engage with content in…

When a tutor is enthusiastic on the content they are teaching, this transfers to the student. I am patient and try to break down complex content ideas into manageable ideas. I believe it is most important for a tutor to tailor their teaching according to the needs of their student. Many students learn in different ways such as visual or through different compounding activities to build a strong foundation before moving on to more difficult concepts. I believe being able to teach a student in the way that is most…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to listen patiently and understand the student's real challenges -- whether the issue comes form gaps in knowledge, unclear concepts, or lack of exam techniques. The role of a good tutor requires to guide students through each stage of learning while showing areas that need improvement. One of…

Inside MaylandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Pranavi covered timetables up to 12x and practised recognising basic equivalent fractions using denominators up to 5.

In Year 7, Milly worked on converting fractions to decimals and percentages as well as applying order of operations with division questions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Harrison focused on solving quadratic equations by applying the null factor law and reviewed methods for factorising quadratics in preparation for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7–8 maths, several students relied heavily on written calculation for times tables (e.g., "she needs to work out the answer on paper" for 12 × 12), which slowed progress in fractions and long division.

A tutor noted, "she sometimes puts the 3 in the thousands column instead of hundreds," revealing how layout issues disrupted multi-digit subtraction.

In Year 10 algebra, one student could express answers verbally but struggled to write equations accurately—especially with negative coefficients and variables—often missing crucial signs.

In English, another student's tendency to omit quotation marks or misplace commas made dialogue unclear and marked down her writing.

Recent Achievements

One Maylands tutor noticed Milly, a high school student, now self-corrects her mistakes in algebraic expressions—she highlights like terms and revises her answers without prompting, which was a big shift from needing step-by-step help.

In another session, Harrison demonstrated greater independence in trigonometry by recalling the correct ratios and showing his full working when solving for unknown sides, something he'd hesitated to do previously.

Meanwhile, with younger students, Naba moved from tracing numbers with guidance to writing several digits unaided (2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9) during maths activities.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Peters Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Trinity Gardens School.
