The skill of empathy towards a student is possibly one of the most important things a tutor should be equipped with, in that they need to recognise that while you're an expert on the material, the student is learning it for the first time. Thus, tutors like myself need to be able to present concepts that the student can understand, i.e., using…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student understand a topic. This may sound intuitive however it is often majorly overlooked and replaced with acceptance or shear memorisation for the student. What I want is for my students is a true understanding of the subject, giving them the tools of learning so that they can…

Genuinely understanding the students need and tailoring the best approach of teaching accordingly is the best thing a tutor can do. No students are same and have same level of intelligence and this should be considered by the teacher. As a tutor, my biggest strength is that i genuinely love teaching not just solving problems, but explaining deeply…

A tutor is solely responsible for shaping a students life. I consider the tutor to be committed in understanding what type of student he/she handles, since all of them aren't the same. Analyzing the talents of students and guiding them in a friendly way, will definitely motivate them to perform better. The teacher must be strong with the subject,…

I consider being empathetic and adaptive for students is highly important. Being empathetic of your students struggles and not putting them down for not understanding is the most important thing a tutor can do for them to ensure they feel comfortable and confident in their learning. Adaptability is also a key component for a tutor as not every…

The tutor must understand the student. Some students try really hard to learn but may fail to show successful results. The tutor must understand this, assure the student that he/she is making progress, and guide the student every inch of the way. Second, the tutor must consider the pursuits of the students as his/her own personal endeavor as…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student believe in their own ability to succeed. A tutor has the power to inspire and guide academic understanding, with which comes a student's confidence and motivation towards that subject. By forming a positive relationship with tailored lessons, a tutor can create an environment…

As a tutor it is my responsibility to make sure the student understands and grasps the concept of the lesson. A tutor in my perspective must be flexible and must be willing to offer any form of support, I.e. helping solve problems, explain concepts in detail, clear misconceptions, etc. Also it is important always maintains a positive attitude and encourages students to learn more. The most important thing a tutor can do is to help a student understand the syllabus of the subject and feel confident in answering any questions that can be in upcoming exams. I've always been hesitant to answer questions in class because I feared being wrong. At home when my parents asked me that same question, I answered without the fear of being wrong. I strongly believe that it's important for the tutor to motivate the student to be confident and answer irrespective of the answer being right or wrong. Students are…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand a student's personality, behaviour and approach to learning. The tutor can alter the learning method to suit the individual student. A tutor needs to understand that all students are different; thus, the approach they use to teach them should also vary. For example, students…

Students are often scared of certain subjects and avoid facing their problems. For a tutor to be successful at his/her job, they need to be able to help the child overcome those fears and enjoy the subject they were once afraid of. Tutoring can be very challenging sometimes. I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is serve as a secondary teacher/mentor to a school teacher. As school teachers have to focus on a large class (usually around 30 students), they are unable to address the needs of each student. As each student has their own struggles and needs, an exterior tutor provides…

Inside MeadowbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sophie worked through numeracy concepts including measurement and space, and also practised statistics and probability based on recent report topics.

In Year 8, Daniel focused on simplifying and rationalising surds as well as using index notation to establish the index laws with positive-integer indices.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily reviewed financial maths applications, concentrating on solving real-world problems involving interest calculations and budgeting scenarios.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students showed process-related challenges impacting their learning.

For example, in Year 11 Chemistry, one student struggled under test pressure to identify key information quickly—"she will need to learn to quickly identify what concepts relate to that information"—resulting in missed marks on stoichiometry questions.

A Year 9 student's foundational algebra skills were unclear; without these basics, he found word problems inaccessible and avoided attempting them independently.

In senior mathematics, skipping careful reading of trigonometry and inequalities tasks led to misinterpretation and incomplete solutions.

Calculator over-reliance was noted in Year 10 algebraic equations involving fractions, slowing progress with mental strategies.

Recent Achievements

A Meadowbank tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with chemistry calculations now quickly spots her own errors and confidently reworks stoichiometry questions, having realised the importance of using moles over mass.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 learner who previously relied on guessing is now asking for clarification whenever unclear and explaining his reasoning out loud, making it easier to catch mistakes together.

In primary sessions, one student who found number lines tricky was excited to show how she can now use them independently to solve addition problems—she even wanted extra practice on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as West Ryde Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Italian Bilingual School.
