The most important thing is to make the student understand there is no reason to be disappointed. I also think that as a tutor, I should be able to teach a student how to be independent and think critically. If a student can solve a problem on her own after a successful session, my job is well done. Patience , Adaptability, Challenging…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to help them become more independent and confident with the subject material. If a tutor can encourage students when they are finding the problems difficult and explain the material to them so they can consolidate and establish the skills so they could teach it to others, then I think the…

Maximize their potential for learning and increase their awareness of their own strengths by creating a conducive learning environment (i.e. strength-based approach, encouragement, inquiry-based learning, one-on-one teaching and learning). I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to impose upon them the enjoyment of the process of learning. A tutor can be skilled, and well educated, but if a student does not enjoy the process of being taught in a manner that which leaves them academically unsatisfied, or frustrated, then their potential is…

The most important thing is ensuring you build confidence in a students understanding of the subject as a whole as it is through this that a student would be able to face any questions that may be posed to them and have confidence within themselves that they are able to understand the topics given throughout their learning. I would like to answer two points which are very important 1. The tutor must understand the feeling of the student so as to understand where he/she is facing problem in the subjects. If you are able to remove the problem you are half way down. 2. If a tutor can make change from students' hate for the subject to love for the subject in my view is…

To be patient while teaching new topics to students. It may be frustrating if a student cannot grasp the topic well directly, but the tutor should constantly remember that the students learn at very different speeds and that is okay. A tutor should cater to the students' needs, for example, ask the students on the topics they feel the least…

I believe that the best thing that a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the self-confidence and self-belief to persevere through any difficulties they may face in their academics. This can be done through the gradual withdrawal of support as the student grows in their skills and confidence. Once the student has established their…

Foremost, a tutor should help their student to identify and reach their goals. Knowing what is important to the student and incorporating that into the metrics for success will help them feel like they are making progress. And secondly, tutors should help the student to form good habits; as motivation can only take one so far, incorporating a good…

A tutor MUST be able to explain concepts to students in very different ways that allow them to understand a difficult topic. Sometimes teachers at school cannot personally cater to students, so tutors should strive to explain things in a very eloquent, logical manner so that the student can follow. Ability to relate. Inside MentoneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting algebraic terms as well as multiplying and dividing them for fluency with basic algebra.

In Year 10, Mia worked through trigonometry concepts including bearings, applying these to real-world navigation problems using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Josh reviewed financial mathematics by practicing compound interest calculations and manipulating equations to solve for unknown values.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student preparing for exams struggled to track which exercises were completed, as one tutor noted: "Ask your classroom teacher for a checklist of chapter exercises that need to be completed." This led to missed practice opportunities and patchy revision.

In Year 11 Methods, a focus on collecting formulae onto a bound reference was mentioned, but not all relevant formulas were gathered in time for the test.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student's algebra work sometimes lacked neat step-by-step layout—errors crept in when working wasn't clearly set out, especially with fraction operations.

Recent Achievements

A Mentone tutor recently saw a Year 11 student who, after previously hesitating with trig applications, now independently labels diagrams and selects the correct ratio without prompting—she even tackled worded questions using SOH CAH TOA.

In another session, a Year 9 student who used to mix up algebraic operations worked through expanding and simplifying expressions with only a quick demo, confidently collecting like terms on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner showed new initiative by explaining how she found the area of an irregular shape step-by-step instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kingston Information & Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kilbreda College.
