The most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, foster a growth mindset, and support them with personalised guidance. Beyond helping students complete homework or prepare for exams, a tutor should help them develop independent learning skills and a genuine interest in the subject. A good tutor also identifies the…

Inspire them. A good tutor is passionate about their subject and consequently this passion inspires the student to achieve their academic goals. Another important thing for the tutor to do is to listen to the student so they can get to know them and determine the best way to teach them. I really like the subject that I'm offering to teach which…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build understanding and confidence as well as encourage independent learning. Understanding comes from a tutor explaining concepts clearly and tailoring lessons to the student's learning style. When the students mistakes are seen as a learning opportunity by a tutor that is…

I believe a tutor needs empathy. The tutor needs to make a targeted effort to understand their student. A student's weaknesses, strengths, drive and thinking style all play an integral role in a student's learning process and thus should be taken into account when developing lessons. Individual needs must be considered to facilitate realistic and…

Promote an excitement to learn. I think if a tutor can make the students feel motivated by the learning process, the content of their subjects becomes easier to digest and contextualise I am an excellent communicator, allowing me to understand the roadblocks that a student may be facing in their learning. I also believe my personal relationship…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with a supportive and encouraging learning environment. This means taking the time to understand each student's unique needs, learning style, and interests, and tailoring the tutoring approach accordingly. Approachability, as well as showing genuine passion allows for a tutor to truly reach out in a meaningful manner to their student. I believe this allows for accessible delivery of content to the student in a manner which allows them to intimately understand the subject material. Make the subject less dreadful and confusing for the students. Help them discover the fun and show them ways in learning the subject so they are wiling to learn intrinsically. A tutor can help create a safe environment for a child to voice their concerns with learning which they may feel unable to do in a class setting. Having one-on-one tutor sessions can also help a child to target exactly what they are struggling with. A tutor also has more time with that student to assess what they are good at in order to keep…

I believe an important component of tutoring is patience, ensuring that the student completely understands the topic before moving on. This leads into following up. Following up the previous session for a couple of minutes in the next lesson is highly beneficial as the student can show their understanding of the topic, allowing the opportunity to…

I believe connecting with the student and understanding what their specific learning style and needs are is one of the most important things. One size does not fit all, that's the reason they're getting tutored in the first place because the school setting is not enough. Getting along and figuring out what works for them is key. I can connect well…

Inside MerewetherTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ava focused on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing mixed and improper fractions, as well as converting between decimals, percentages, and fractions—including recurring decimals.

In Year 9, Tom practised linear equations by finding x- and y-intercepts from equations and rewriting them in the form y = mx + b, then worked through calculating gradients using graph examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sarah reviewed the use of SOHCAHTOA for solving right-angled triangle sides and angles in trigonometry, followed by revision of Pythagoras' theorem with step-by-step calculations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, one student often estimated answers in algebra instead of showing full working—he skipped steps in isolating x, which hid sign errors. This meant confusion when negatives or brackets appeared.

In Year 10 financial maths, another relied heavily on plugging numbers into formulas without understanding the concepts behind them; when worded questions changed style, confidence dropped and mistakes crept in.

Meanwhile, a senior student sometimes avoided challenging algebra problems entirely if they looked abstract, missing out on valuable problem-solving practice.

These habits led to moments where the answer was technically correct but the reasoning—and deeper understanding—remained shaky.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Merewether noticed Liz, a high school student, now initiates discussions about challenging HSC maths problems and confidently explains her reasoning—even teaching the tutor why her solution works, a big shift from earlier sessions when she hesitated to speak up.

Danika, also in high school, recently began highlighting tricky questions in class to bring to tutoring and has become much more organised—she completed most problems independently this week and reached a personal best of 60 times tables correct in 100 seconds (up from under 40).

In primary years, Lara's marked improvement was clear when she recalled and applied distance-speed-time formulas without prompting during practice questions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hamilton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like The Junction Public School.
