It is vital that a physics tutor can assist in building their student's confidence. With believing that they have the necessary abilities, the student can achieve their goals. Furthermore, it is extremely important that a tutor can learn to understand how a student learns in order to be able to work with them in the most beneficial way. I believe…

The most important thing is interactive learning sessions and developing an interest in learning. Creating that much-needed spark is important. A tutor gives direction and motivates students to do well. One-to-one interactive sessions are life-changing for students. Every human being is different. Same way, the approach to learning is different…

The most important things I can do for, and with, a student as a physics tutor is are being able to set realistic goals, work towards and track progress towards those goals, and celebrate achievements together. Tutors must know the content that they are teaching, and refresh their knowledge in their own time if they are unsure of something.…

A tutor should deploy all abilities to assist the student. However, a strong work ethic is a physics tutor's most important quality. Creating a relaxed and stress-free environment can help students progress steadily and achieve their academic goals. I believe that patience is an important quality for a tutor to possess. When a tutor is patient…

I believe that a physics tutor must guide the student to learn independently by introducing different methods and techniques to learn. This is because an hour or two of supervised study in a week is not sufficient to learn and excel in a subject. Further, in this modern world with ever expanding technology there are many avenues to study and learn…

The most import thing a physics tutor can realise is that everyone has different expectations and preferences for learning and those criteria need to be what shapes how you teach individual students. Just as importantly however, you need to be constantly searching for the root of the problem your student is having; -Is their basic math…

Inside Mermaid WatersTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Milly worked on understanding outliers and measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode, range), using explanation sheets and practice questions to solidify these concepts.

Year 8 student Ava focused on creating and interpreting frequency tables, including cumulative frequency, gradually building up from basic to more advanced examples.

For Year 10, Liam tackled linear equations by identifying if an equation is linear and calculating values using the y = mx + c form.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student hesitated to attempt algebra questions without notes, often looking back at previous examples instead of trusting her own process—she became less confident as soon as an equals sign appeared, noted the tutor.

In Year 7 maths, skipping careful working and not setting out steps neatly led to confusion during factorisation tasks.

For a senior chemistry worksheet, memorising charges was avoided in favour of referencing handouts, slowing progress on balancing equations.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student missed homework deadlines and left some revision incomplete, making it harder to consolidate fractions and decimals across topics.

Recent Achievements

One Mermaid Waters tutor noticed that a Year 10 student who used to get overwhelmed by complex Excel data tasks is now confidently double-checking her answers and referring back to her own summary sheets when stuck, rather than freezing up.

In a recent session with a Year 7 student, the tutor observed genuine improvement in algebra: after initially hesitating, she began identifying the right process for factorising without needing prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once struggled to visualise multiplication surprised her tutor by explaining division using her own diagrams and then tackling two-digit problems independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Broadbeach Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Merrimac State High School.
