The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to understand how the student learns. By knowing the students learning preferences and ability the tutor can tailor their approach to individuals rather than utilising a blanket approach, which can often leave some students behind. My strengths lie in the ability to communicate ideas or…

I think the most important thing would be to help a student understand the subject that they are struggling in as well as ignite a passion for the sunject within themselves. I can easily alter my teaching style to fit an individual student's needs. I feel like I am a warm person which means students might find it easier to communicate their…

I believe the most important function of a tutor is to motivate and challenge their students to be the best version of themselves. Though tutors provide academic support, their main priorities should lie in their interpersonal connection with their students. If this connection didn’t exist, students might as well watch a prerecorded video. This…

I think a tutor is best when assisting the student rather than directing the student. A student should point to their respective goal and the tutor will pull them towards that goal. I believe my strong mathematics background gives me a strong edge when it comes to explaining math concepts and ideas in a vibrant way which is easy to understand. I…

The most important role a tutor can play is showing constant and unconditional support for their student. This is something I've learned from the example of my previous tutor who answered almost every email or text message within the hour within reason. I believe showing this constant support allows the student to trust us as tutors and react more…

This comes from personal experience, but making the subject fun. Subjects like say maths, english, physics aren't always seen as fun by the average student, and can be daunting to think about. - Motivation: As a a tutor I believe motivation is very important to a student's learning. You must be able to deliver your course in an enthusiastic way. - Ongoing assessment: It is very important to regularly determine a students strengths/weaknesses with a trial exam. This information can then be used to tutor the student accordingly in…

To not show them the answer straight away. Push the student to understand what they are doing, and use the knowledge that they have learnt to solve the problem. There is no point in getting a question wrong, looking at the answer and saying 'I will do that next time'. It is essential that they can do the questions individually and confidently. I…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is restore or establish the students self esteem and help them overcome the challenges they're facing. Inside MillerTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ariana reviewed her school exam paper, focusing on angle relationships and probability, and practised recalling square roots and squares through quick-fire questions.

In Year 10, Jack worked on solving quadratic equations using the factorising method and interpreting functions by sketching their graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Liam tackled differentiation from first principles and applied the chain rule to a set of practice problems.

Recent Challenges

Ariana (Year 7) often leaves homework incomplete, especially revision sets covering earlier topics—recently, most Year 7 test questions were left unanswered.

Messy and unclear working in long division and graphing tasks has made it hard for teachers to follow her process; as noted, "her graphs are quite messy and hard to understand."

In exam settings, she struggles when notes are lost or not referred to—she forgot angle properties after misplacing her angles notes.

After setbacks or confusing lessons, Ariana can lose confidence quickly ("I can't," she said before eventually completing a long division question), making her hesitant to attempt new problems.

Recent Achievements

One Miller tutor noticed a Year 8 student who used to hesitate with long division now solving questions independently and even explaining her steps out loud—last session, she completed all homework without mistakes.

In a recent high school tutoring session, a Year 11 student who previously struggled with exam errors began identifying his own mistakes during revision, correcting them on the spot rather than waiting for guidance.

Another high schooler, after weeks of confusion over congruent triangles, was finally able to prove them unaided and started structuring his working much more clearly in his notes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Miller Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Therese Catholic Primary School.
