Tutors are someone who generally help and teach in a way schools might not. Hence, a tutor is supposed to be easy to approach, fun, interactive, friendly and must also try different ways to inculcate certain topics into the child’s brain, meanwhile experimenting with different teaching techniques and figuring out the best one. I wouldn’t just…

I believe that if a tutor is kind, patient and shows respect, they will see greater results with their students. In order for effective learning, it is paramount to create a distraction-free, positive environment, and prepare well-thought out lessons ahead of time. Lastly and perhaps most importantly, I think that if a tutor is ready to motivate,…

I believe that as a tutor, the most crucial lesson I can impart to my students is to empower them to freely express their doubts and ask as many questions as they need. Encouraging a questioning mindset and creating a safe environment for curiosity to thrive is paramount. By doing so, I foster their confidence and enable them to actively engage in…

Give them confidence- either to have a crack at new questions or topics, or just continue to work and learn independently. Usually this is achieved by helping students find a way to enjoy the subject. I'm a good communicator and very empathetic. One of the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give the student motivation to learn and ultimately excel academically. To me, the most important thing is to teach and make the student not to feel any less of him or herself. I would always try to inculcate positive thinking into my students mind as it is very important at that age for them to know that everything is possible and achievable. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be there for them and listen. It is important for students to know that mistakes are supposed to be made, and as tutors we are here to guide them through their mistakes. Furthermore, our role as tutors is to help children do the work, not do the work for them. Sometimes all students need is…

A tutor needs to be able to imbibe in a student, a way of thinking about things, instead of just spoonfeeding the content and making everything easy for the student. It is very important to clear the basics of the student before anything else. Once the base is strong enough, the student will be able to handle any level of complexity in things. I…

My maths teacher always said that giving students 'a spark in their chest to learn' was the most valuable thing that a teacher could give to students. I absolutely agree. The most important thing is definitely being patient and kind. A lot of people sometimes forget children/teens are not fully functioning adults yet, and they’re learning. Therefore, it’s very important to push them to the best they can do. By being indulgent and firm at the same time, I believe a tutor can get children to be their very best,…

Being able to explain concepts well to a student is arguably the most important thing. The best tutors are those who can explain and teach challenging ideas with relative ease in a short period of time because they have such good interpersonal skills. I believe my greatest strength is personal interaction with the student, and the ability to…

I emailed Ezymath and they got back to me within 24hrs. Found out what I needed and got me in touch with a tutor. Very easy to start the process. First tutor did not gel with our child so we were not charged and they put us in contact with another who is just the fit. The admin have been more than helpful and friendly every step of the way. We found that we needed to redo some things and strat from fresh, the tutor is excellent.

Inside MitcheltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student James practised solving simultaneous equations and worked on Pythagoras' Theorem in geometry.

Year 9 student Lily focused on calculating simple and compound interest, as well as applying trigonometry to angles of elevation questions.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Zoe improved her understanding of decimals by placing them accurately on a Cartesian plane and used scales on maps for measurement problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student working on algebraic equations often avoided writing out steps, especially when expanding brackets; as one tutor noted, "he skipped showing his working, which led to repeated sign errors."

In Year 11 trigonometry sessions, over-reliance on calculators meant key formulae were not memorised—this slowed problem-solving and left gaps in understanding.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner frequently arrived without necessary reading books or forgot homework for spelling practice, making it hard to build consistency.

For one creative writing assignment in Year 8 English, hesitation about starting the story resulted in little progress that day and growing frustration.

Recent Achievements

One Mitchelton tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to get stuck on linear equations now tackling each step independently and even double-checking their own answers before asking for help.

A Year 11 student recently managed to solve compound interest questions without reaching for the calculator immediately, which was a real shift from her earlier habit of guessing at the formulas.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner—who once hesitated to read aloud—confidently finished an entire page during reading and writing practice, pausing only to ask about unfamiliar words rather than skipping them.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mitchelton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of Dolours School.
