The most important thing that a tutor can do is to pivot their teaching style in order to suit not only the content but how the student learns. Without this ability to change as necessary you are putting your students at a significant disadvantage. Breaking down complex concepts into simple ideas. Creating a comfortable learning environment where…

In my opinion, a tutor must be able to empathize with the student and create a safe space for them. Its important to be constructive and patient especially with the ones that take time to grasp topics. One must keep instructions clear and always strive to empower the child by focusing on their strengths. Engage them instead of lecturing…

The most vital thing a tutor can do is to make study fun , yes, a student who just remained worried about studies and exams should no longer be worried if he or she has a tutor . A tutor should be someone on whom a student could rely on about their studies and performance. apart for that , a tutor should understand a student’s weaknesses and…

Tutors needs to deliver their fullest in educating the student. They need to have the patience to redirect from the main concept in focus to teach the fundamentals which the student lacks the knowledge. I explain as detailed as possible depending on the extent the student knows-if the student lacks the basics of the subject, I make a considerable…

Sometimes a student needs more than just a tutor who can teach him or her difficult contents; they also need someone who can provide them with encouragement and support so they can start believing in their own skills. A tutor can come up with millions of strategies to apply in order to deliver a lesson, but it'll be worthless if you don't relate…

Teaching the content and helping them fully grasp it, rather than doing it for them. I find that a lot of subjects have a particular rhythm to them; although some require rote learning (like particular concepts, especially within math), there are always patterns that can be identified so that students achieve their very best. For example: Stage 2…

The most important thing a tutor must do is to assess the student's answer and provide feedback, as that really helps them learn from their mistakes. Equally integral is, taking a doubt session as solving the doubts of the student not only improves learning but also develops a sense of confidence in the student about the subject, which develops a…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help the student become **independent in their thinking**. It’s easy to just show solutions, but that creates dependency. A good tutor instead builds the student’s ability to approach problems on their own—how to think, how to break things down, and how to recover when they’re stuck. That…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are: 1. Helping students gain confidence as well as the skills they need to meet their goals. 2. Helping students relieve their academic stress and support them as much as I can. One of my main strengths is that I have numerous study techniques that I can share with them. Hence, my students…

Inside Modbury NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student James focused on solving linear equations, calculating slope, and understanding parallel and perpendicular lines using graphing methods.

In Year 9, Sarah practised drawing graphs in both slope-intercept and general form, and worked on writing comparative essays using TEEL/PEEL structure for English.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Lily built her skills with simultaneous equations through substitution and elimination techniques, including representing solutions graphically.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 science, one student repeatedly second-guessed correct answers, as noted: "a lot of the time the student got it right but questioned themself," which slowed progress and made it harder to build confidence with new material.

In Year 8 maths, skipping steps during calculations meant key errors were hidden—one tutor observed missing working on paper.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student would often guess rather than systematically solve word problems, especially when distracted by unrelated details. Each instance left students uncertain about their strategies and sometimes unsure whether success was due to skill or luck.

Recent Achievements

One Modbury North tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rely on prompts is now tackling algebra problems independently and even chose to finish extra questions after the lesson.

In a recent high school maths session, another student who previously hesitated to ask for help began voicing specific questions about tricky topics, leading her to solve multi-step equations solo for the first time.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student surprised her tutor by switching to a new division strategy she'd just learned at school; although it took longer, she stuck with it until she could explain her method and reach correct answers on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Tea Tree Gully Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Modbury School P-6.
