Giving confidence to the student is the most important thing. If the student is not confident in their ability to do the task, then they will believe that they can not and will not try. Understanding the frustrations that the student can have because they don't understand something, staying calm and patiently taking the student through the problem…

Listening. I think the best thing a tutor/mentor can do is listen to their students to find out which subjects/areas that need to be focused on. Anyone can teach the syllabus but a great tutor will produce a study plan suited to each individual student which will help bring best out of them. studying at RMIT has helped further broaden my Math and…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is give students the right direction and support so they can build confidence and excel on their own. One of my biggest strengths as a tutor is that I’m always willing to learn. If there’s something I’m not fully confident about, I make time to understand it properly—because I believe I can…

I consider understanding the student's problems and establishing a strong rapport to be the most important things. Tutors may be great teachers or have excellent knowledge of the content, but providing the correct and necessary information is of utmost importance. Understanding what may prevent a student from achieving as high as they want allows…

Change of a student's viewpoint towards a subject. Once the attitude is changed rest is easy. Science is the study of natural laws and math is the universal language. We are studying nature in science and writing it down in math. It is very important for a student to feel connection to a subject. Not every student has the same thought process,…

I also believe that having an open and safe communication space with the students so they feel free and comfortable to express themselves in the classrooms.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is understand their true needs. Sometimes students need more than just a teacher who is repeating themselves to help them understand things. Tutors should be trying different techniques and approaches that better suit that student, and understand the weaknesses of that student to better help…

A tutor can provide much greater flexibility than a teacher in a class room setting. Definitions and basic rules and concepts are very important in order to have a solid foundation. By slowly building up the theory and applying it to problems, students can use logic and reasoning to eventually solve difficult situations. Apart from this, inspiring a genuine interest in the subject is something I value as a tutor. I am extremely…

Inside MontmorencyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex focused on linear equations and applied these to worded problems, working through practical examples step-by-step.

For Year 10, Jessica explored the Sine and Cosine Rule by solving triangles in context and revisited key trigonometry concepts using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan tackled logarithmic and exponential equations as well as related geometry questions, emphasizing both algebraic manipulation and interpreting solutions graphically.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student struggled with organizing written work during algebra problems, leading to confusion when isolating variables—he skipped steps in rearranging, which hid sign errors.

In Year 5, a learner avoided showing working in long division due to uncertainty and often left answers incomplete.

For a Year 11 student tackling trigonometry, anxiety about using the correct formula sometimes meant he stuck rigidly to Sine/Cosine rule even when a simpler path was available, causing lost time.

Meanwhile, in Year 10, over-reliance on answer choices rather than interpreting worded questions directly made percentage tasks slower and less accurate.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Montmorency recently noticed some real shifts in students' approaches. In Year 10 maths, Hayden used to get stuck when isolating variables, but after working through the steps together he can now break down equations independently and even spots shortcuts on his own.

A senior student who'd previously rushed through questions is now re-reading each one and using alternative answers as clues—a big change from guessing blindly.

Meanwhile, a primary student has started tackling multiplication by "breaking" numbers apart for easier calculations, showing far more patience than before. Last session, she finished all her sums without skipping a single step.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Eltham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Montmorency Primary School.
