Ultimately, a tutor must teach his/her student to be able to rely on themselves and think autonomously when problem solving i.e. not to be afraid of trial and error. I would say my strengths are attributes such as patience with the student (repetition when necessary), determination in getting the message across, and a friendly attitude towards all…

Truly listening to a student's needs and being flexible enough to alter plans for a lesson. Also, it is important to be patient and acknowledge that not everyone grasps concepts at the same rate, and being willing to repeat concepts again for the student to understand. I am honest about the progression of a student and tell them about what they…

A tutor must be able to develop and understand a student. A student will need to understand the concept themselves and it is our job to assist them to understand any issues that arise in their development. To put it simply, tutors are guides and the student is the captain. Therefore we must be able to resonate with each student and treat each one…

The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is to believe in them and show encouragement. In my opinion the most important things a tutor can offer a student is confidence and guidance. This is because as a tutor, building a student's confidence can directly impact their attitude towards learning and how well they can achieve the marks they are aiming for. Similarly, by giving guidance to a student, not only prompts them into learning…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student’s confidence in their own ability. I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do is to work with a student from a student's perspective. It is exactly the reason why group-studying is so effective as everyone is on the same wavelength. A tutor's job is to be able to "read" into the student's mind and solve-problems by comfortably adjusting and improvising…

As tutoring gives a more face to face approach, a tutor can do more than a teacher on some occasions for a student as they give more individual focus on each student's weakness and strengths. Inside MortdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student worked on adding and subtracting fractions, including changing between mixed numerals and improper fractions, as well as multiplying and dividing fractions.

Year 8 student Kirsten focused on geometry topics like identifying corresponding, alternate, and co-interior angles, plus solving for missing angles in triangles using angle sum properties.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Reece tackled advanced mechanics by practising projectile motion questions and developed skills in rearranging the subject of equations to support his HSC exam preparation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, one student's written work on percentages often lacked clear steps, making it difficult to see where confusion with multiplying and dividing began—he tends to forget the process but remembers when guided.

A Year 11 physics student struggled to complete questions without direct prompting; missing out on independent problem-solving meant "finishing the questions alone was an issue."

In Year 7, another student's trouble with identifying straight angles showed up as incomplete solutions when not given examples or pointers. This left them unable to check their own answers during practice sessions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mortdale noticed a real turnaround for one Year 12 student who used to get stuck on modern physics problems—after focused practice, he can now handle electric and magnetic field questions with much less prompting.

Another high schooler has begun taking her own notes during sessions, something she previously avoided; this shift means she's recognising gaps in her understanding and actively working to fix them.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who was hesitant about mixed numerals now confidently switches between improper fractions and mixed numbers and breezes through decimal addition tasks without needing reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Penshurst Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Penshurst West Public School.
