As a tutor, I firmly believe in the profound impact that effective education can have on a student's life. Drawing from my experience in teaching as a CSR activity, I recognize several essential aspects that I consider crucial in nurturing a student's growth and learning journey. 1. Fostering Understanding: One of the most important things I…

I consider the most important things a tutor can do for a student to be developing the student's interest for the subject and also maintaining academic integrity. I recently graduated from Brisbane Girls Grammar School with an ATAR of 99.70. I consider myself a friendly and approachable person to all ages. I am a creative thinker and problem…

Be adaptable and change teaching methods based on what the student needs the most, whether that's different exercise styles or explaining a concept in a different way. I believe that knowing how to apply the content is just as important as knowing the content in order to maximise marks. I think a strength of mine is reading questions and quickly…

The most important thing would be to create a safe space for students, so they will feel welcomed and understood. This can build their confidence as well. Once they feel safe, the students can ask any question and tutor can help them and fill their knowledge gap. My strength would be perseverance, adaptability, and emphaty. I would try and give…

I believe the single most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide patient and constant support for them outside of their classroom, and try to clear all their doubts effectively. Moreover, a tutor should guide their students in a manner in which they can focus on key areas of improvement and then work on realistic goals, which…

The most important thing that I can do as a tutor would be to make sure the kid understands everything that I teach. Each kid is different. Finding the right teaching style for that kid and teaching as such will make the kid more involved into the subject and makes learning fun. I am a very good observer and an active listener. I make sure I tend…

I have a very applied way to understand…

Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. The best thing a tutor can do for a student is affirm their self-worth as a learner and as an individual. It can be frustrating not being able to figure something out, but it becomes a lot less daunting without extreme expectations. I think my strengths as a tutor lie in my patience and my creativity. It's certainly not an easy task learning…

A tutor needs to be patient and build a healthy learning curve. One of the most important things for a tutor is to be encouraging and positive. Negativity can lead to resentment towards a subject and deflect the student from making a genuine effort to learn. A tutor also needs to be well-versed with the material so they can teach the student as…

Tutoring is about building a relationship with the student based on trust and respect, making the student feel comfortable enough to ask questions, express their concerns and doubts, which was a key aspect for me when I was learning. As a tutor, it is your obligation to teach in a way that your pupil develops a passion for the topic he is learning. There is nothing worst than somebody who is bored while learning. Focusing on deeply understanding and on practical application is key to awaken a desire to continue learning. "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't…

Create a comfortable, relaxed environment to learn and ask questions. Improve confidence: many students don't know what they're capable of, and just need the self-belief to show it off. A tutor can clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and guide them accordingly. He should focus on the strengths and minimise their weaknesses. Inside MosmanTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Zara worked through volume and unit conversions, practising with real-world measurement examples.

In Year 9, Sam tackled expanding polynomials and reducing fractions step-by-step using practice questions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia focused on analysing the function domain and range as well as applying function notation to problem-solving exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 5 English, one student avoided answering addition questions that involved carrying numbers and chose only easier homework problems, as a tutor noted: "She completed long addition questions that did not need carrying."

In Year 7 Maths, another student repeatedly guessed answers and waited for feedback instead of showing his own working, leading to less independent problem-solving.

A Year 10 student left assigned pre-reading for an English play unfinished, which meant class time was spent explaining context rather than tackling questions.

When homework or in-class note-taking is skipped or incomplete, valuable practice and test preparation opportunities are lost.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mosman noted that one high school student, Lachy, has become much more proactive about his learning—he now arrives well prepared for English sessions and is able to answer most questions independently, a shift from previous lessons where he relied more on guidance.

Another older student, Ollie, recently completed over 90% of a mock maths test quickly and correctly after showing much sharper recall of both new and old concepts; previously, he struggled with formula recollection under pressure.

Meanwhile, in a younger session, Theo stopped guessing at spelling tasks and instead began checking for the "ty" ending in number words—a change from earlier lessons when he'd give up or guess randomly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mosman Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mosman High School.
