The most valuable thing I can do for my student as their tutor is increase their confidence in their ability to achieve study goals and set greater challenges, and thus feel a sense of satisfaction and enjoyment whilst studying. My strengths as a tutor are delivering methodical yet flexible lessons, which ensures that all learning outcomes will be…

I believe a tutor should assist each student with their learning style to achieve the best in a subject and also be a good role model to help them in their school journey. A tutor should also be optimistic, encouraging and compassionate to understand each student's needs and goals. I am a diligent, flexible, compassionate and open-minded tutor…

A tutor should be patient and understanding. They should listen and come up with ways ti teach which will better suit their student. I believe building a trust connection with the student is necessary so they don't hesitate to ask for help. I am a good listener, I will be able to understand the area of confusion better. If I don't know any part…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is provide constant reassurance in their abilities. I feel like a lot of the time when students feel overwhelmed with school work they lose confidence in their ability to answer questions to write an essay. Having a tutor, someone who can guide them, motivate them and assess and improve weak areas…

Encourage them to keep pursuing academic success and bolster their confidence, and creating a welcoming an uplifting space that allows them to look forward to tutoring each week, rather than dread it. The ability to tailor my teaching style and explanations to suit the student, and the ability to guide a student through the learning process in a…

Being willing to help, but also acknowledge the rare instances where a tutor may be unable to help to a confident level. I believe it is better to acknowledge if you do not know something rather than pretend you do and risk teaching something that is incorrect. When this problem is encountered, however, it is up to the tutor to rectify this by…

Being able to help students understand what they're learning and then carrying that over and applying that to any assessments they may have. Making sure the student is confident in their own ability and that they remain calm during stressful situations where they may be short on time is also very important. Also stimulating any interests the…

In my opinion, one of the most important things a tutor can do is build a strong relationship with their student and create a safe environment for them to learn in. It's all about making them feel supported and understood. Also, helping them set goals and celebrate their progress to help boost thier confidence. My greatest strengths are my ability…

Honestly - be patient and adaptable. So many kids have come to me after school and shown me a method that their teacher absolutely insists they use, and that they just completely don’t get. Every child learns differently. There’s no point trying to force a specific method if it simply doesn’t work for them - I struggled with this as a…

I would say being able to help the student in a way that they won’t require help anymore in the future. To teach them life skills such as being able to add, subtract, tell the time, spellings, nouns, pronouns etc which will come in very handy and is used in everyday life. I am pretty good in Maths and English so those are my strongest subjects…

The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student first. I acknowledge the capability and learning pattern of the student and adapt according to their needs. The most important things a tutor can do is make learning innovative and effective. The students must enjoy the process of learning and not find it monotonous. I believe this will go a long way in keeping the student's attention. Another important thing a tutor can do is adopt a safe approach wherein a student feels comfortable asking questions…

The most important thing a tutor can do for his student is that he can pass down his knowledge to his students that shall help them in the future. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to inspire them to aim higher than where they currently are and to act as a guide towards that goal. It is also important for us to be there for them when they need us but not spoonfeeding them so that they can learn for themselves. I am disciplined and would instil the same sense of…

Local Reviews

I've had a wonderful experience with this tutoring service. It's so easy to connect with the team—whether you prefer picking up the phone or sending an email, the client service representatives are quick to respond. They provide a clear overview of expectations and requirements, and then you can sit back while they take care of matching your child with the right tutor. The convenience of having sessions at home, at a time that fits your schedule, really helps relieve the stress of managing other responsibilities. The trial session before committing makes it easy to ensure you're paired with the right person to meet your child's individual needs. After that, it's just a simple process to reallocate sessions and you're good to go—everyone's happy. I also appreciate the discount for paying upfront for sessions. The representatives are always easy to connect with, and they follow up to make sure everything is going smoothly. We've been really pleased with the tutors assigned to us, and it's clear the team takes time to carefully match tutors based on our needs. Overall, a great experience!

Inside Mount WaverleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jessica worked on plotting linear graphs, including handling multiple lines on a single Cartesian plane, and used real examples to understand gradients and intercepts.

In Year 10, Ryan focused on quadratic equations by practicing completing the square and explored graphing parabolas with dilations and translations.

For Year 12, Ethan revised differentiation techniques such as the chain, product, and quotient rules and applied these skills to solve application questions from past exam papers.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Specialist Maths, a student waited until the last day to complete homework on simultaneous equations, leading to forgotten steps and gaps in recall—"by which she has forgotten what we learned last week."

In VCE Methods revision, another learner avoided writing full working or using correct notation when tackling calculus and graphing tasks; equal signs and logical layout were often missing, making it harder to track errors or secure marks.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 session revealed distraction from mobile phones during lessons, with note-taking left incomplete and explanations needing extra time to land. The result: confusion lingers where clarity was needed most.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mount Waverley noticed a big shift with one Year 11 student who, after weeks of hesitating to speak up, started asking for clarification whenever something was unclear—especially during tricky calculus problems.

Another high school student, previously overwhelmed by her school's approach, surprised herself by requesting extra homework at the end of the session and tackling it independently.

Meanwhile, a younger student showed real initiative: she now catches her own mistakes in maths without prompting and even laughs about "silly errors" instead of getting discouraged. Last week, she redid all her practice questions solo after reviewing the method together.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Monash Public Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Holy Family School.
