Some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is ensuring that the student knows the content that has been taught. Also make sure that you are listening to the student and try to minimise their weaknesses and maximise their strengths. As a tutor, my strengths are being confident and only speaking what I know of. I will only teach…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for their student is give them more personal attention and specific, immediate feedback that isn't always available in the classroom. Having someone who can hone in on things that you personally find difficult and mistakes you frequently make helps boost confidence. I think my main strength as a…

A tutor must be adaptable and proactive. They must observe a student's progress and deduce what method they learn best and adjust their teaching accordingly. Each student is different and has different capacities of learning and a good teacher must identify them for each student and make the best out of their unique potential. I can teach the…

Every student is different, from personalities to their academic goals. I would say a tutors' ultimate goal would be to get in sync with the way the student is taught in their respective schools, colleges or universities. Additionally, it is extremely important to make friends with the students, as this is necessary for proper engagement. I am not afraid to do some research when it comes to getting a student to…

A trait I consider to be very important as a tutor is being a good leader. They should be very responsible for their actions, meaning that they will ensure each tutoring session is effective for the student. They should also be assertive, trustworthy and mindful, which helps them offer guidance to other students. Lastly, they should keep an open…

To be able to display a sense of confidence in the area/subject you are teaching, as students tend to mirror your confidence when learning as well, having a positive impact on their performance and overall wellbeing. Foremost, a tutor should help their student to identify and reach their goals. Knowing what is important to the student and incorporating that into the metrics for success will help them feel like they are making progress. And secondly, tutors should help the student to form good habits; as motivation can only take one so far, incorporating a good…

Inside MulgraveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 Oscar reviewed circle theorems involving intersecting chords, secants and tangents, as well as tackled sketching parabolas to build confidence in algebraic graphing.

For Year 7 Hayley, sessions focused on strengthening her grasp of the distributive property and using visual approaches to clarify key math operations.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Hayley practiced explaining her problem-solving steps from a recent test and explored logic-based activities like Rebus puzzles and story riddles to enhance critical thinking alongside mathematics.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, one student did not bring class notebooks or show workings with homework; "did not have workings to the homework I have given so reassigned it, to be completed with workings." This made it hard to spot where confusion started in algebra.

A Year 7 student avoided word problems, losing motivation when faced with longer questions—especially in story riddles—so didn't get full exposure to key reasoning skills.

In VCE maths, another relied heavily on notes and rarely attempted questions independently during revision sessions, leading to missed feedback opportunities before tests.

Recent Achievements

One Mulgrave tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to link math to real-life scenarios now using calculations confidently in the context of his athletic training, even initiating discussions about applying statistics from sports science.

In a recent high school session, Hayley identified where she typically lost track in multi-step linear equations and independently developed an organised approach that helped her resolve several story riddles without prompting.

Meanwhile, a primary student who used to avoid worded math problems now spots her own errors as she explains solutions aloud and manages to answer parts of challenging written questions on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clayton Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St John Vianney's School.
