First of all, teach and guide them. I understand that children know their academics, they just need a guide to show them the right way of approaching these questions. I love math so I love teaching math and I hope I can impart my love for mathematics in my students too. I have been tutoring for a long time so I can say I do have quite a bit of…

Foremost, a chemistry tutor should help their student to identify and reach their goals. Knowing what is important to the student and incorporating that into the metrics for success will help them feel like they are making progress. And secondly, tutors should help the student to form good habits; as motivation can only take one so far,…

Inside Oakleigh EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 Dylan worked through a diagnostic quiz and reviewed probability concepts, reinforcing skills with targeted practice on challenging questions.

For Year 11 Parth, recent sessions focused on explaining the effects of changes in the cash rate on aggregate demand and unemployment, as well as developing structured written responses for economics papers covering AD-AS models and Australia's economic goals.

Meanwhile, another Year 11 student tackled market failure topics in Economics—such as externalities and allocative efficiency—using SAC preparation materials and short-answer exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, skipping steps while factorizing led to repeated calculation errors—one tutor observed, "lots of middleman equations left out," which made it harder to spot where mistakes occurred.

In VCE Economics, a student sometimes rushed through multiple choice questions without reading them fully, resulting in missed marks and confusion when tackling earlier topics.

Another senior student's essay responses lacked clear explanations of diagrams and omitted key terminology, especially under time pressure.

These habits meant valuable time was spent reworking answers or clarifying concepts instead of building new skills or gaining confidence with advanced material.

Recent Achievements

One Oakleigh East tutor noticed a Year 12 student who used to rush through written responses now taking time to structure answers clearly, adding more economic terminology and connecting ideas—something he'd struggled with before.

In a recent session with a Year 8 student, the tutor saw them approach tough factorisation problems much more independently; they finished most worksheet questions on their own after needing frequent hints in earlier lessons.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously hesitated to ask for help began raising their hand when stuck, leading to them finishing all ten multiplication questions without errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Amsleigh Park Primary School.
