I believe that a tutor should be able to assist in building confidence in their students' abilities and should encourage learning from both mistakes and criticism, as well as taking these aspects in a positive manner. I think that a tutor's job is to both work on their students' educational needs but also build strong soft skills in terms of…

I believe that a good teacher will prioritise the mindset of their student(s) before attempting to actually teach them anything. To enter the flow state prior to gaining knowledge is, in my view, of utmost importance. A tutor should find a way to ensure that their student is enjoying the learning experience. One example is, rather than explaining…

The most important thing you can do for a student is usually to inspire them, as this is the number one key to success and personal growth for them in a subject, in my opinion. Allowing students to appreciate beauty and simplicity links the value of the topics to their work in it. Of course, some students are already very passionate so for them…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is motivate the student and help build their love for the subject. Helping the student let go of their fear of the subject can not only help them in the present but also aid them in their future endeavours. I personally am aware of the feeling of fearing a subject but also conquering this fear by…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to not only teach content but to be there as a mentor. Exam periods, life and post-school options can all be stressful for students and it is vital that a tutor can mentor students throughout this through stress mechanisms. This, coupled with effective teaching methods and provision…

As a tutor it is vital that we make sure the student doesn't resent learning and to achieve this we must be open to how the student responds to different teaching styles and adjust our approach to make it individualised to each student. I believe my strengths include my patience and communication skills. I always found reading a textbook over and…

Not just give the student answers but help them understand how they got to the answer that way even when you are not there, they can still complete their assignments at a satisfactory level. I'm patient, I cannot move on until I'm sure my student has understood. I'm also pretty thorough, going from the basics to the level that the child is trying…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to engage the student in a way which makes them want to keep learning that specific subject if not fall in love with it. Throughout my academic career, I have had many tutors. My favourite tutors have been the ones that have been patient and flexible with me. I think being patient towards your students allows a space where minds can grow and learn. Inside MystertonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Eve worked through trigonometry exam questions, focusing on strategies for both familiar and unfamiliar problems as well as tackling similarity and congruence.

For Year 10, Isaac concentrated on chemistry skills including identifying ionic and covalent bonds and determining chemical formulas based on compound interactions.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Sophia practised simplifying index laws, calculating with integers, and applying order of operations using examples from her recent school test.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student struggled to complete homework for several sessions, particularly in algebra and coordinate geometry; as one tutor noted, "she could not finish her assigned homework again."

This pattern led to repeated gaps in applying sign rules and interpreting diagrams.

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student was unprepared for a lesson after forgetting to open the required online textbook—slowing down practical work on gas laws.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 English student's thesis statements lacked clarity and cohesion, with missed opportunities to revise body paragraphs based on feedback.

The consequence: time spent retracing basics instead of progressing with new material.

Recent Achievements

One Mysterton tutor recently noticed a real shift with a Year 11 student, Jacinta, who used to wait for help but now arrives having drafted her English essays in advance and already acted on feedback from both school and tutoring.

Another high schooler, Eve, had struggled with applying trigonometry concepts to unfamiliar problems but last session she independently tackled complex questions and could explain exactly where she'd made earlier mistakes.

Meanwhile, in primary maths, Sophia—who previously hesitated to attempt division—has started working through new division problems without prompting or extra support.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Citylibraries Aitkenvale—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's Catholic School.
