I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to help them better understand the material they are learning and to really engage with it. Tutors have the ability to be one on one with students and they can really transform a students perspective and views on a particular subject for the better. My strengths as a tutor…

Making a student feel comfortable and confident about the subject they need help in is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. Therefore, the student is likely to excel in that subject because of the positive impact the tutor has left on the student. Good grades would be the obvious answer. However, if I can spark an interest in the subject for the student the grades will logically follow. A strength would definitely be communication, I find that I can easily get my point across eloquently. I also take pride in my etiquette and friendliness. A weakness that I can see being an issue is lesson…

I feel that it is important for tutors to be there for students as much as they possibly can. This includes attending to issues or problems which students might face in class as soon as possible. Additionally, I feel that conscientiousness in their lessons and materials is important. Having a comprehensive study outline and helping students better…

As a requirement to be able to teach college physics, I had to take a course in teaching etiquette where we were required to submit a teaching statement for our final grade. The philosophy I leaned on in that statement is one I still believe to this day, and that is that the best thing a tutor can instill in a student is a seed of curiosity and…

A tutor should be able to teach a student how to learn. They shouldn't just coach students on what they are studying but also how they are studying - whether their mode of study is effective and efficient enough. So that in the end, the student is able to tackle any subject or obstacle they run into without a tutor. Being friendly and…

A tutor should be able to allow the student to understand the concept with a good amount of familiarity. This involves repetition and testing of students' understanding using different methods. When concepts are difficult, a tutor should be able to simplify the concept such that all students understand it with clarity. I am very patient and quick…

Inside NedlandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sofia worked on identifying and using nouns, adverbs, verbs, and adjectives in English, alongside practicing multiplication tables for 4, 6, 7, 8, and 12.

In Year 8, Chloe focused on understanding isomorphic graphs and adjacency matrices in preparation for an upcoming test.

For Year 10, Daniel tackled Pythagoras' Theorem by finding hypotenuse lengths as well as working through problems requiring calculation of unknown side lengths given the hypotenuse.

Recent Challenges

In recent lessons, a Year 9 student did not complete assigned homework and sometimes brought only answers rather than full working, which made it hard to pinpoint where understanding was lost.

A tutor noted, "He relied on mental maths for division instead of writing steps," leading to repeated errors in basic calculations.

In Year 11 Maths Methods, messy written work during standard deviation questions meant time was wasted hunting for calculation slips instead of focusing on new concepts.

Another senior student skipped practicing harder problems and depended heavily on calculators before attempting questions by hand, especially under exam pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Nedlands noticed that a Year 10 student who used to get stuck on worded trigonometry questions is now breaking down each part independently and double-checking his steps, which wasn't happening a few weeks ago.

Another recent high school session saw Chloe challenge herself by working through matrices unaided for the first time, showing she's comfortable relying on her own skills.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who previously hesitated to ask for help with tricky multiplication now openly checks his thinking out loud and requests clarification whenever he's unsure.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nedlands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nedlands Primary School.
