The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help the student understand rather than showing the student, as when you understand the process you're less likely to forget than when you just know the process. I am a first-year university student studying Bachelor of Laws and with a background in Specialist Math (Maths C), Math Methods…

To prepare for class and constantly check up on their progress. Students often need help outside of class, which lots of tutors do not provide. I am always accessible outside of class hours, ensuring students get help whenever they need it. Another important thing is to motivate the student. I always felt inspired to study after my sessions with…

A tutor has to be mature which will help them to develop a special bond with all their students. It is highly important to be empathetic. Some students can be weak and slow in understanding few concepts, dealing patiently with them would be the key to success. My strengths as a tutor are: 1. I develop a strong bonding with my students 2. I try…

In my opinion the most important thing is to teach your students HOW to learn. This means to teach them how to approach a new topic and break it into smaller steps, and how to use a study technique that work best for them. As we have all heard: give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime. :)…

the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure that the concept they have taught is clearly understood. One wrongly interpreted concept, especially in maths can be a huge hindrance in understanding other concepts in higher grades. Thus solving all the questions that students have with clarity is the tutor's biggest…

I think the most important aspect of being a tutor is to assist students in coming up with their own interpretations, especially in english, by expanding their skill set. By giving students the tools to succeed but letting them work through the problems first, it allows them to put forward any errors or miscommunications, which can then be…

A tutor provides a supportive environment for their students. This is most true for the students who struggle the most, who may need more help than their peers who don't find the topic as difficult. A tutor can explain the practical applications of the subject he or she teaches in real life. As a tutor I can make my students visualise the concepts which cannot be grasped instantly. I believe that as a tutor I know the potential areas or concepts where students face problems to understand and I am confident to explain the tricky and difficult…

The most important thing I think a tutor can do for a student is to instil in them a good approach to learning through teaching them practical techniques to work smarter and get more out of the effort that they put into the subject. Students, in my opinion, are like clay that can be molded in any way. And if I have such a wonderful opportunity, I'll do everything in my power to make the most of it. I believe that a tutor should always be ready to help pupils with their concerns. In order for students to do better under him, a tutor must not only assist students academically…

Relate. The student will understand the concept once it resonates with something the student is interested in. A tutor needs to describe the concept, demonstrate the concept and invite the student to attempt the concept. This open dialogue, dispelling fear of failure and welcoming the opportunity to learn is an important attribute a tutor must…

Support them. Sometimes students just need that boost of confidence and support to understand. Frustration in their own learning can often end up being the reason why a concept is not being understood. I think identifying the misunderstanding and making sure their foundation is solid. As long as they understand the content, they will be able to answer the questions! Inside New FarmTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ben practised identifying and writing sentences with metaphors, similes, and personification to boost creative language skills.

For Year 11, Ella worked through her Maths Essentials assignment—focusing on completing the conclusion section—and reviewed feedback for her English IA2 task.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Jack explored chemical stoichiometry by balancing equations and briefly reviewed a recent maths assignment for clarity.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often arrived unprepared, with forgotten materials and assignments, which made it difficult to settle quickly into lessons.

In Year 10 Maths, he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors, resulting in more time spent retracing calculations than progressing.

A senior Chemistry student became sidetracked by unrelated physics content during revision, leading to incomplete review of essential topics before an upcoming assessment.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 English draft was overloaded with information but lacked clear referencing—feedback given wasn't fully addressed in the final submission, leaving assignment requirements unmet and creating last-minute stress.

Recent Achievements

One New Farm tutor noted that a Year 11 student who had previously hesitated to ask for help is now openly seeking clarification during sessions, making it much easier to target her learning needs.

In a recent Year 9 session, a student who struggled with focus earlier in the term stayed engaged through the whole lesson and completed his assignment draft with only minor corrections needed.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student showed new independence by attempting every question unprompted in his maths test—something he avoided before—and finished the series pattern problems entirely on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as New Farm Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Holy Spirit School.
