As a tutor, it is important that you pass on the right knowledge to the student. Make them think about things by themselves instead of giving them straight away. A tutor, shouldn't discourage students if they ask a dumb question, they should resolve all their queries with a good understanding. A tutor's job is to support a student and be curious…

Explaining in the simplistic way that a student can understand. If you can not explain it in simple terms it means you do not understand it. The tutor should be patient and help the student understand. I am patient, easy going and quickly understand the problems that students face during their studies. I love Mathematics and Physics so much that I…

Apart from the obvious requirements to provide sound academic knowledge and advice, the other aspect of tutoring that I consider most important is getting the student excited about learning. The best teachers have a successful balance of both aspects. When a tutor is excited about the content, that will get the student excited as well. An…

It is also very important to continually get feedback from the student to ensure that they are understanding the concepts. I believe its important to assist a student enough so they can increase their confidence and become better independent learners. This may include encouraging students to discover different study strategies and asking them open-ended questions to promote independent thinking. Being open to a student's feedback and insights is of high importance,…

It's the responsibility of a tutor to meet students where they are at. Tutors should come to learn the boundaries of what their students do and do not understand and create structure and context for pushing those boundaries to ultimately envelop the knowledge they need to succeed. This can sometimes mean "back-filling" missing knowledge or…

- I believe the most important thing for a tutor to do is to set a role model and attempt to invigorate a strong love of learning within the student. By doing this, the tutor can give the student an opportunity to make greater academic progress individually in combination with the tutor. - Obviously, tutors must also be able to effectively assist…

I believe the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to not only develop their understanding of a subject but teach each lesson in specific ways designed for different students. Different methods are useful in order to best involve students and encourage them to want to be there to learn rather than for it to feel like a chore. I believe i’m…

As a tutor, it is very important to understand the real demand or weakness of their students. Besides, it is also important to know their expectations. Therefore, you are more likely to come up with a solid and actionable plan for your student and manage the progress and expectations during the tutoring process. I think my strengths as a tutor…

Inside North Curl CurlTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Leo practised times tables up to 12 and solved word problems involving vertices, faces, and edges.

For Year 9, Charlotte focused on coordinate geometry—finding gradients and equations of straight lines—and also revised statistics by interpreting data sets.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sam worked through trigonometry topics such as bearings and angle of elevation, using diagrams to visualise real-world scenarios, alongside a session on differentiation basics.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student raced through coordinate geometry questions but skipped showing working, making it hard to spot calculation slips—"needs to slow down and show working," one tutor noted.

In Year 11 English, a reluctance to plan essays led to unclear topic sentences and weak evidence selection; this left paragraphs muddled when tackling module responses.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner grew impatient with multi-step money problems, often guessing rather than applying known strategies.

When revising times tables in Year 5, anxiety about mistakes caused over-erasing, leaving written work messy and incomplete by the end of the session.

Recent Achievements

One North Curl Curl tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rush through exam questions is now taking time to check for "silly mistakes" after discussing his recent results, leading to fewer errors.

In Year 11 English, a student who previously struggled to connect ideas in essays has started using clearer PEEL structures and linking techniques, which showed up as stronger analysis in their latest draft.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once hesitated with subtraction now completes problems much more quickly and confidently—she finished an entire set independently this week without needing prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dee Why Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Curl Curl North Public School.
