Besides from general knowledge of the subjects, understanding the strengths as well as weaknesses of the students is a must for personal tutors. We can develop the most effective way to teach if we are fully aware of these factors. Also, one of the most important things a tutor can do is to be patient and considerate with their students. This way…

I believe, more than anything else, that a tutoring space should feel judgement free for a student. A student should not feel hesitant to ask questions or to clarify a concept. In fact, I believe it to be a good sign if a student is able to outright say that my explanation is not what they need or understand. Fostering such a safe and trusting…

Listen to them to develop an understanding of the areas they may struggle with or are looking for extra support in. I think also being creative in my approach when required so that the student gets the most out of the sessions and helps them to develop a better understanding. As a result, I think it is important to understand how the student…

A tutor's traditional role is to deliver a concept to a student. However I believe that they also work behind the scenes to raise a student's confidence and enjoyment in a subject. Sometimes it's the tutor that makes or breaks a student's interest and motivation to learn. I have recently just finished schooling so I am very knowledgeable of the…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to provide the student with the tools to study and pass their assessments. The main goal for any tutor should be to help get the student to the point at which they no longer require a tutor. I am able to explain information in more than one way, and adapt my teaching methods to suit the…

A tutor must be able to not only provide feedback, but also be able to respond to a student that is active in the process of learning. They must be able to structure learning around the student's difficulties in a topic, and give a pre-determined plan of how they are going to make that student's difficulties a strength. Because of this, they…

A tutor’s most important role is to support and guide the student’s learning in a way that builds their confidence. It’s not just about explaining content, but about creating a safe space where the student feels comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. A tutor should encourage independence by teaching strategies that help the…

Personally for me, the teachers at school never went into what you really need to succeed in the HSC, and being one student in a class of 30 meant most times your questions were left unanswered. Having being tutored, having someone available to ask questions that I did not understand was very helpful throughout my schooling career, and I hope to…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for students is to give them the confidence to believe in their abilities in order for them to view themselves as capable enough to learn new things, work hard and perform their best. This starts with the tutor identifying the student's area of need and working hard alongside them to improve it.…

Inside North GeelongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Phoebe worked through revision on indices, using targeted practice to prepare for an upcoming exam.

For Year 10, Jayden focused on solving quadratic equations by factorising and explored Pythagoras' Theorem and introductory trigonometry, applying both skills to worded problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Amelia covered exponential growth and decay along with the basics of functions as a new topic, including work on irrational numbers.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working on quadratic factorisation and inverse trig sometimes skipped memorising the specific rules for each type, which made it harder to identify which method to use when new questions appeared. As one tutor noted, "She needs to memorise the different types of factorising and the rules for each."

In Year 8 algebra sessions, written work was often rushed or lacked careful layout, so sign errors crept in and were missed until feedback time.

During primary division tasks, another student would occasionally guess answers instead of showing working—leaving them less confident when faced with multi-step problems in class.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in North Geelong noticed that a Year 10 student, Phoebe, who previously struggled with indices and surds, now completes these problems confidently and no longer needs support on those topics.

In a recent high school session focused on exponential growth and decay, the same student was able to clarify misunderstandings about compound interest through targeted practice—something she had found confusing before.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student showed a real shift in attitude by focusing intently on questions throughout an entire lesson, compared to earlier sessions where staying engaged was difficult.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corio Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Geelong English Language School (interim name)-North Geelong Campus.
