The most important thing a tutor can do is not only help them through school, but be encouraging and not make students feel less than. This enables them to feel supported through their academic journey from a person who recently gone through their struggles, not just by teachers and parents. I am very patient and empathetic which I believe are…

A tutor should be able to explain concepts in a manner which allows students to understand the concepts and apply it elsewhere. A tutor should assist students in understanding concepts on a deeper level, rather than just rote learning. Furthermore, a tutor should be passionate in what they teach. A teacher that is passionate about subjects will…

A good tutor can raise interest of the student. Once the student feel interested in the subject, then he/she will be keen on learning new things. In addition, tutoring is more than teaching, and students are more engaged and proactive. I have strong interest in maths and I have my degree in commerce, this would be helpful for students who wanna…

As a tutor you need to provide the individual with problem solving skills to allow them to recognise when a situation is difficult and ways in which they can go about the problem or situation in an effective way to gain insight. This relates to when the child may have a difficult problem for which they can break things down into smaller more…

Have a lot of patience and not get frustrated. Find a way of explaining or doing something that the child understands. Not giving up. A child who doesn’t understand can get frustrated and it is important for the tutor to motivate the child and try to find a way to tutor the child that focuses on their specific learning style. I have a lot a…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are motivating the students to learn on their own as well as arming them with the tools and study skills. The motivation to learn is critical, since the tutor can teach the material, but at the end of the day, it is the student who has to master it. Without such…

I can customise the lessons and activities just for your child. 2. I get to know your child’s individual learning style and can adapt teaching methods accordingly. 3.I will prepare your…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to engage in thorough discussions about their thought processes, providing real-time feedback. I believe that the most important thing is to empower the students so they feel as if they are able to excel in their studies. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them to learn for themselves. It is easy to rote memorize a formula or a text, but to be able to teach someone how they can teach themselves and to show them how to problem solve so that they can attack problems independently is far more valuable I believe my strengths as a…

A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. If you have a basic idea of the student mindset you can develop techniques to make them understand the subject in a way they don't find it hard. Gamification…

A tutor possesses many pivotal roles in a student's journey to tertiary levels. I believe the single most crucial contribution a tutor can make is to fan the flame. If a student gives up on their own ability despite genuine interest, then their potential will be lost. A tutor has the unique capability, and responsibility, to recognise and…

The most important thing that a tutor can teach his student is 'how to learn'. You can give a man a fish and feed him for a day but when you teach the man how to fish you can feed him for a lifetime and that is the impact I would like to have on the student. Patience is inherent to my personality and I find that this is the single most valuable…

Inside NorthbridgeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Luca focused on mastering algebraic equations with fractions and brackets, then applied these skills to solve formulas and generate equations from word problems.

Year 8 student Nick practised analysing box-plot graphs and calculating cumulative frequency, using diagrams to visualise data for his upcoming assessment.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Felix worked on converting mixed and improper fractions and improved his understanding of dependent and independent clauses through targeted grammar exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student's over-reliance on mental calculation—"I can do this in my head"—meant he often skipped written working for tricky percentage and exam questions, leading to repeated sign errors that took extra time to correct.

In Year 11 English, a pattern emerged: after setbacks understanding complex poems, confidence dropped and linking sentences became repetitive, with conclusions simply rephrasing topic sentences instead of building on earlier explanations. As one tutor noted, "he needed prompting to notice the repetitiveness."

For a Year 8 student in algebra, messy working out and inconsistent note-taking made it hard to review mistakes or track progress during revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Northbridge tutoring session saw a high school student who previously rushed through reading comprehension tasks start pausing to re-read questions and double-check answers, resulting in noticeably more precise responses.

Another tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to struggle with structuring essays now independently draft clear thesis statements and introduction paragraphs for history topics, after initially needing step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, a younger student recently showed new initiative by attempting all multiplication questions before asking for help—whereas before, she would hesitate or wait for prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Castlecrag Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like SHORE - Sydney Church of England Preparatory School, Northbridge.
