I believe the most important aspects of a tutor are to make learning enjoyable, to build confidence and to encourage a problem solving attitude. The more fun one can have learning, the more you want to try and work on your weaknesses. Being confident in yourself also improves the will to learn and problem solving builds resilience when answers…

The most prominent thing is to work according to the level of child. For example, some students love to study through animations and some by real world examples and also some by doing practicals or activities. Hence; its the duty of a tutor to find the way of teaching that interacts a student and make it interesting for a child to explore that…

Being a good tutor requires you to be a good listener. Without listening to problems that students may experience, the time spent for both the student and the tutor will be wasted. I take pride in my ability to allow students to communicate any struggles that they may have before starting. In addition, being engaging while teaching ensures that…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to make learning fun and not tiring or boring. The subject taught or the way it's taught should always be exciting, even if the test marks are not that high yet. Once the student finds their interest in the subject, I'm sure they will climb back up and succeed in no time. My strengths as a tutor are: I…

The most important thing is to make the student understand there is no reason to be disappointed. I also think that as a tutor, I should be able to teach a student how to be independent and think critically. I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to impose upon them the enjoyment of the process of learning. A tutor can be skilled, and well educated, but if a student does not enjoy the process of being taught in a manner that which leaves them academically unsatisfied, or frustrated, then their potential is…

By providing clear explanations, encouraging questions, and offering consistent support, a tutor can help students develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Build genuine confidence alongside the content. A student can learn a method in one session, but if they leave still believing they're bad at maths, not much has changed. The most important thing is making them feel capable, that the subject is learnable for them specifically. Beyond that, I think a good tutor listens more than they talk, and…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is paying attention. By doing so, a tutor can clearly identify where they are struggling, and then provided catered guidance as a response to that. It can also pinpoint a student's specific learning style, allowing further tailoring of sessions to mimic that. Further, it generally just shows the…

The most important thing that is necessary in learning is that we understand what we study. Though it seems difficult, giving each student the individual attention is what a tutor should strive to achieve. The different mindsets in the class should be brought together and set in a pathway where they get excited about learning something new every…

It sounds basic but it is a common error made by tutors. Making sure that the student understands more than just how to solve the problem. Inside Notting HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Aanya practised telling time using both analog and digital clocks, and worked on identifying symmetrical shapes through hands-on drawing tasks.

Year 10 student Kevin focused on balancing redox equations as well as exploring the differences between galvanic and electrolytic cells using past exam questions.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Sarah completed detailed organic chemistry revision, tackling reaction pathways and structural isomers of homologous series with real VCAA-style problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Chemistry, answers often lacked clear layout and consistent use of units, especially in calculation and equilibrium questions; as one tutor noted, "units need to be shown correctly at all stages of answer." This led to confusion when interpreting formulae or balancing redox equations.

In Year 9 Mathematics, working was sometimes scattered on the page or missing key steps in long division and fraction conversions, making it difficult to check reasoning.

A Year 4 student's homework revealed distraction during lessons, with unfinished word problems and skipped working for time-telling tasks—leaving her unsure how she arrived at each answer.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Notting Hill noticed a Year 11 student who previously rushed through calculation questions now takes a methodical approach, laying out each step clearly and using the correct SI units without reminders.

A Year 8 student, who used to get distracted during lessons, showed much better concentration last week—she was able to work through problems mentally and completed all set tasks without losing focus.

In a recent primary session, a Year 4 student confidently solved fraction addition and multiplication questions independently after struggling with mixed fractions earlier in the term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glen Waverley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Pinewood Primary School.
