The best thing a tutor can do for their student is to properly listen to them. A tutor or academic mentor can do so much more than just spew out a lesson plan; they can listen to the students' concerns, whether that's about the subject or their general emotions. Once their queries are eliminated, students can enter the right headspace to focus on…

I believe tutor's key responsibilities are to provide guidance in a non-judgmental way, foster a healthy and positive learning environment through engagement and motivation, and nurture a deep understanding of the subject matter through effective teaching strategies, encouraging critical thinking, and practical analogies and application. The most…

For me the most important part I can do for a student is to build a genuine and strong connection with them. I believe that when a strong and relaxed relationship is created with students, they are far more likely to take ownership of their learning. Alongside this, I think without this factor many students will struggle to actually learn and…

Tutors should always be there for the student, and encourage them to try their best. Tutors should also be supportive and make learning an engaging and fun experience for their students. I’m quite approachable and friendly, and also am able to explain concepts in a clear manner. I can also adapt to the students need and trial different ways of…

A tutor should not only be able to teach the students but also be able to support and encourage the students to reach their potential in a positive manner. It is important to take into account the different learning needs that each student has and adjust teaching styles according to them personally, to ensure success. I am patient and I understand…

I believe besides the obvious academic sides, it is important to just be genuine as more than a tutor for a student and try to help them as much as I can whether as an older peer to look up towards to or just someone to talk to. If I treat tutoring as a chore or a job, I feel like the student will be able to feel that and that's why it's more…

I think it's most important to understand how somebody thinks an to figure out how to explain it someone in a way that they understand. It's also important to be patient and make sure that you don't just give somebody the answer and instead just give them the push to help them figure out the problems and ensure that they properly understand what…

Encouraging a student to let them find their own way to solve problems and for future study. The most important things a tutor can do for a student are: 1. Listen - be aware of the student's needs and goals. 2. Adapt - be flexible and willing to change things if the need arises. 3. Focus - be structured and strict when the need arises, to keep the student on track with their goals. My strengths would be my enthusiasm for learning,…

Allow a student to learn and gain knowledge in a fun way, or at least learn willingly and most importantly joyfully. Guiding. The most important thing a tutor can do is to guide a student. Forcing them to follow a set of rules is only going to work until they learn that they have the power to oppose you. Tutors can't control students, instead, they should simply guide them. Talking to them about scenarios from your experiences and what consequences you've…

Tutors should provide support to students who are struggling and help them gain ability and confidence, and push students who are excelling to reach their full potential. A tutor can give important one on one attention to a student which is difficult to get through their normal school teacher, so their weaknesses can be honed and skills refined.…

Inside NunawadingTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 Zoe worked on advanced index laws and tackled worded questions involving indices, as well as practising complex linear equations with rearranging and problem solving.

Year 8 Abeeha focused on mastering perimeters and areas of composite shapes, learning new area formulas for rectangles and triangles, plus converting between square and cubic units.

Meanwhile, Year 4 Jacob strengthened his addition and subtraction skills using a variety of hands-on activities like mathematical mazes and matching games to boost confidence with double-digit numbers.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 maths student frequently skipped writing out working for worded problems, making it harder to catch counting errors and visualize solutions; as noted, "needs to work on writing out the working out more."

In Year 10 science, difficulty recalling terms like "aorta" stemmed from not keeping organized vocabulary lists, which led to hesitancy during labelling tasks.

A senior student tackling exam-style extended-response questions in maths relied heavily on referring back to notes instead of attempting recall first—this slowed progress and limited retention.

These habits left students retracing steps or second-guessing answers instead of building confidence through independent practice.

Recent Achievements

In Year 8 maths, Zoe moved from hesitating with linear equations to completing every fluency question on her revision sheet ahead of a test, showing far more independence than before.

Meanwhile, Kaylee (Year 10) demonstrated a new ability to use her calculator strategically during algebraic problems and integrated various tones into argumentative writing—something she hadn't attempted previously.

On the primary side, Jacob now works out multi-digit addition by carefully lining up his numbers on paper instead of guessing, and he completed all regrouping addition questions correctly this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nunawading Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nunawading Christian College - Primary.
