The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make learning feel accessible and exciting, by creating a safe space where students feel comfortable to ask questions and not walk-away from tackling any challenges, but rather enjoy the learning experience. My biggest strength as a tutor is probably being able to build confidence in my…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to foster a deep understanding of the subject matter and to build the student's confidence in their own abilities. It's crucial to create a learning environment where students feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and explore different solutions. Personalizing lessons to…

To be able to not just educate but to be able to support the student in building their knowledge and confidence in order to improve their life in various ways. I believe that the specific bond that can be built between a student and a tutor is what I believe makes a tutor different from an educational support. Building a bridge between me and my…

A tutor needs to be encouraging to their students ensuring first and foremost that they know they can improve despite their circumstances. A tutor always reviews topics of interest to the students, so in time of a tutoring session the tutor is confident in their understanding of the topic I always put in the work, reviewing concepts and questions,…

I think that one of the important things a tutor can do for a student is to first understand how much the student already knows and where they are struggling. This helps the tutor guide the step-by step to improve their understanding of each topic. Another important thing is patience because learning takes time, and it a calm and encouraging…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is to be non-judgemental and to genuinely believe that each and every student will succeed. Although some children might be slower to grasp certain concepts, at the end of the day the most important thing is to encourage them every step of the way. I graduated high school with an ATAR of 94.3,…

I think we should identify student's unique ways of learning and support that. In addition, we should use methods that students enjoy rather than seeing them as drudgery. I have patience in seeing through students learning a small step at a time. I also possess a compassionate attitude that allows me to do my best to enable student…

The most important role of a tutor is to foster confidence in students and cultivate a genuine passion for learning. By demonstrating that challenges are an inevitable part of life, tutors can help students view these obstacles as opportunities for growth, encouraging them to embrace and pursue them. Ultimately, a tutor's goal should be to inspire…

To teach students the foundation for greater and more difficult topics they have to face in the future. As well as this, providing them with a person they feel comfortable asking what they might think a 'silly' question could be. I think that tutors with patience would be very important, as different students learn and understand things at different speeds. Patient tutors would also allow the students to feel more comfortable around their tutor allowing them to ask more questions, helping them master a particular subject. I think the most important thing as a tutor is encouraging the student to want to learn, and to actively seek out explanations and ask questions. Even if a tutor can explain something very clearly, a student who does not want to learn will probaly not pay much attention, and the explanations will go over their head. By building a rapport with them…

A tutor needs to be a strong support for the student. Providing a comfortable environment where the student can discuss and barriers to learning that may be affecting them without the fear of judgement or doubt will enhance the learning experience by many fold. Inside Oaklands JunctionTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Bianca revised all questions she'd found challenging and built a personalised cheat sheet for her upcoming test.

Year 10 lessons with Liam included practice on exercises 8.5 and 8.6, focusing on advanced algebraic manipulation and problem-solving strategies.

Meanwhile, Year 11 sessions with Ava concentrated on exam revision, tackling typical short-answer questions and working through common pitfalls in mathematical reasoning.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Mathematics, a student repeatedly forgot to bring required materials like their exercise book and CAS calculator, which led to lost lesson time ("student forgot all required materials").

In VCE English, one student arrived without having watched the assigned film or prepared study notes, leaving them unable to contribute fully.

A Year 8 learner misplaced crucial notes before a SAC—this meant extra stress trying to recover missed content last minute.

For a Year 11 Maths class, skipping written steps was noted: "should try their best with writing out all their working out, without skipping steps," making it hard to catch and correct errors.

Recent Achievements

One Oaklands Junction tutor noticed a Year 11 student who, after previously struggling with test performance, recently achieved improved results on a major assessment by focusing more during sessions and asking targeted questions about his mistakes.

In Year 8, another student who used to stay quiet now regularly brings her own questions to the lesson and even asked for extra homework last week.

Meanwhile, a primary school student who was hesitant with new maths concepts earlier in the term surprised the tutor by working through five exercises independently and finishing all of them correctly during one session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Craigieburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Elevation Secondary College.
