The most important thing is ensuring you build confidence in a students understanding of the subject as a whole as it is through this that a student would be able to face any questions that may be posed to them and have confidence within themselves that they are able to understand the topics given throughout their learning. Without this, you would…

The most important thing a tutor can offer his student is the gift of knowledge. My excellent ability to make sure my student understands the content instead of rote memorizing is the key to success. I will encourage my students to not just accept the given answers but question them. This skill is the key to extensive thinking which is what the…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for their student is give them more personal attention and specific, immediate feedback that isn't always available in the classroom. Having someone who can hone in on things that you personally find difficult and mistakes you frequently make helps boost confidence. I think my main strength as a…

I believe that the overarching role of a tutor is to have a lasting, positive impact on a student, and this is possible through various means. Firstly, they can support the student academically, by guiding them through difficult or foreign concepts step-by-step. Through this, a tutor can immensely improve a student's self-confidence and engagement…

Every student learns differently, and building a positive relationship allows a tutor to identify what motivates them and what support they need. When students feel comfortable, they are more willing to ask questions,…

Some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is ensuring that the student knows the content that has been taught. Also make sure that you are listening to the student and try to minimise their weaknesses and maximise their strengths. As a tutor, my strengths are being confident and only speaking what I know of. I will only teach…

make sure the tutors are patient and goes on a pace that is comfortable for the student. the most important thing to consider as a tutor is that each student is different and has their own way of learning, and its our job to understand and match their skillset, not the other way around. To teach students that it is okay to be wrong or make mistakes as long as you correct it afterwards. It is also important to become self confident and trust that you can tackle any problem. I will…

The most important thing I can do as a tutor is meet every student where they are. That means truly listening to them, understanding what they already know, and empowering them to vocalize their own thought process because when a student can articulate their thinking, real learning begins. The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to allow their minds to create their own version of knowledge rather than just gaining a pre-existing idea. It's only when we challenge the students to think out of the box that they actually start realising the importance of what was in the box. Giving them a vivid imagination can be a…

To be honest, an excellent tutor needs to be able to assist students in meeting deadlines. Delivering instruction that gives students the tools they need to be more independent in their studies is as vital, though. I would suggest to my pupils working on abilities in time management, critical thinking, and evaluation. I think that one of my skills…

Resilience after drawbacks. As a tutor, above all, you should be helping your students achieve their goal. Whether they're aiming for a pass or excellent marks to enter their preferred university, a tutor should be helping them succeed academically. Realistically, a tutor will most likely not change a student's opinion of a particular subject, but that is fine. I think my…

The most important thing of a tutor in my opinion is to foster genuine passion for learning for the students. I believe that the academic success of any student should be self-paced, and the tutor could only help them if they face a too-challenging problem or cannot come up with a plan to achieve their success. Passion to help students, I…

Henry was very happy with Hayden's style of tutoring. He found him clear and concise in the way he explained methods, and was teaching him the same way his teacher is at school. Whilst I was listening in the background I could hear that Hayden was very encouraging towards Henry which I'm sure gave him some confidence to tackle the next equation. I know that Hayden will leave more and more homework going forward, he was keen to get to know Henry as a person, identify his strengths and weaknesses first.

Inside OakleighTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Olivia worked through solving quadratic equations and practiced graphing equations, using examples to connect algebraic solutions with their graphical representations.

In Year 11, Harry focused on applying the rational root theorem to polynomials and tackled quartic equations from recent exam questions.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student James completed Math Methods Chapter 7 example problems, emphasizing function analysis and calculus applications relevant to his upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, one student's written work in algebra showed he skipped showing steps, which hid sign errors—this meant time was lost retracing calculations instead of moving forward.

A Year 11 student tackling calculus became distracted during sessions and often left questions incomplete when focus slipped.

For a Year 6 learner, diagrams and tables were sometimes missing or messy, making it hard to track working in worded problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student avoided writing out full solutions for fraction tasks, as noted: "just full working out," resulting in missed marks on tests even when the method was understood.

Recent Achievements

One Oakleigh tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to avoid asking for help now confidently brings up challenging calculus questions at the start of each session, keen to tackle them together.

Another high schooler had been struggling with test mistakes in algebra but has started identifying exactly where she went wrong and correcting her own work before asking for feedback—a real shift from needing step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who was hesitant with multiplication tables is now reciting them unprompted and focusing for longer stretches during lessons, finishing all assigned problems independently last week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
