Build their confidence as much as their knowledge. A lot of students who struggle aren't actually bad at the subject they've just convinced themselves they are. Fixing that mindset matters as much as getting the right answer. I'm good at breaking down complex problems step by step without overcomplicating it. I also don't make students feel stupid…

Actually speaking, the tutor should focus on potential development rahter than merely improving the skills of a student. It could be best tutors can adopt practices such as NLP ( neuro linguistic programming) to boost rapid learning of a student. But for that only truly commited tutors would raise their hands. Since it reqires a lot of hard yards.…

Allowing them to take an initial step to understanding by themselves, and when they need help, guide them to the right path without completely providing the whole answer. This encourages critical thinking amongst students and shows them that they are capable enough to learn these hard concepts that they may be dealing with. Ultimately, teaching…

A tutor needs to be patient with the student, no matter the student's age/grade level. It is extremely important that the student feels comfortable with the tutor and is able to ask any question, be it big or small. Listen to the student. I firmly belive that students know where they lack and what's stopping them from achieving their goals. Ensure the student doesn't lose hope or motivation to study. It is imperative that students get enough time and space to practically apply what they learn in ways that pique their interests. As a tutor I strive to first…

I believe a tutor should be a mentor, someone the student can relate to and feel comfortable expressing their problems to, but should also be assertive and draw the line between being professional and being a friend. I think a tutor should do her best to teach the student to the best of his/her abilities, even if that means going slightly over…

A tutor should be patient and understanding of a student's mistakes. A tutor should also help to develop skills for a student to understand a concept, not just remember it, and build on a student's ability to learn independently. The most important things a tutor can do to a student is to not teach, but to make them understand what is being taught, and thereby boost their confidence. Merely parroting out concepts to students would get the job done, but will not help the student understand any better, or feel any more confident. Instead, understanding where the student is…

Inside Oakleigh SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Max worked on measurement, specifically converting between units and identifying types of angles using diagrams.

In Year 8, Chloe tackled algebraic fractions—simplifying and multiplying them—and also reviewed techniques for solving for x in linear equations.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sam focused on speed calculations and practiced converting units of time within real-world word problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student repeatedly needed prompting to continue with long multiplication and rarely wrote out working, making it hard to pinpoint misunderstandings—"he needs constant reminder to do it systematically."

In Year 9 algebra, a lack of confidence meant correct answers were often left unattempted, despite knowing the method.

A Year 4 learner was easily distracted during worded problems, which slowed progress on multi-step division.

Meanwhile, a senior student preparing for geometry questions forgot basic angle rules and struggled to explain their reasoning aloud; this made error correction much slower in practice tests.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Oakleigh South noticed a Year 10 student who previously needed step-by-step help with algebra now solves simple equations on his own, only checking in for reassurance at the end.

In another session, a Year 8 student who used to leave worded problems unfinished has started working through each part methodically and completed all set questions without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who would often lose focus during longer tasks managed to finish an entire worksheet on area and perimeter accurately after staying engaged for the whole lesson—something he hadn't done before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Warrigal Road Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Oakleigh South Primary School.
